Cirencester 'Own Goal' decides local derby against 'Bassett'

Uhlsport Hellenic League
Premier Division
Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Royal Wootton Bassett Town
The latest visitors to The Talent Hire Stadium for an Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture was ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT TOWN and after a hard-fought match the result was decided by an ‘Own Goal’ early in the second half.
The match started at a frantic pace with the visitors pressing from the kick-off and they were rewarded seven minutes into the game when a cross into a mass of players struck the hand of a home defender and the Referee immediately awarded a Penalty Kick. JACK HOBSON-McVEIGH stepped forward to convert the spot-kick.
Shortly before the mid-point of the half, and following a period of pressure, a Jordan Morris cross was powerfully headed home by AIDAN BENNETT to level the score.
Both sides created opportunities during the remainder of the half but the defences stood firm.
The visitors came out of the blocks quickly after the break to press down their left flank and within a few minutes a low strike from Kyle Witt was deflected over the stranded ‘keeper for an OWN GOAL.
Encouraged by their breakthrough the visitors continued to threaten whilst Cirencester relied on quick counter attacks but as the half continued, they were forced into a number of changes and play became ‘scrappy’.
As the game was drawing to a close Cirencester put the Bassett defence under pressure but were unable to find a way through the resolute rear-guard and the visitors took the points.
