ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT TOWN visited The Talent Hire Stadium for an Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture and after a hard-fought game the result was decided by an ‘Own Goal’ early in the second half.

Prior to this match Royal Wootton Bassett Town sat in 7th place in the league table with 53 points from 32 games played whilst Cirencester were in 15th place with 35 points from the same number of games.

‘Bassett’ won the reverse fixture at the end of September 3-2.

The match started at a frantic pace with the visitors pressing from the kick-off as in the opening minutes Dan Grieve was released into the left channel of the home box and his shot was blocked near the goal-line by Andy Lewis and deflected onto the left post before it was cleared.

A couple of minutes later a looping cross from the ‘Bassett’ left flank was headed clear in the right channel of the home box before being recycled for Brad Pagliaroli to send it into a cluster of players near the left post where it struck a defender’s hand. The Referee immediately awarded a Penalty Kick and JACK HOBSON-McVEIGH stepped forward to smash it inside the left post as custodian Ronnie Newbery dived in the opposite direction.  0-1.

Undeterred by the setback Bonsa Teshome produced some clever footwork to evade a couple of challenges, ten yards inside the Bassett half, before releasing Finley Bell to the right corner where he also produced some skill as he worked his way along the byline to cross to the far post where it was headed clear to start a counter that resulted in Pagliaroli firing wide of the left post from 25 yards.

Shortly afterwards Jack Horrell sent a free kick from the centre circle to the left corner for Jordan Morris to collect and cross - it was diverted for a corner kick that resulted in a back post header that ‘keeper Dan Brabham tipped over his crossbar. The resulting corner kick from the right reached Kyle Pitt and his header was blocked on the line before being cleared.

Almost immediately Cirencester were awarded a free kick that Bell delivered to Lewis, in the left channel of the Bassett box, and he laid it back to Morris who sent a deep cross to the far-right post where AIDAN BENNETT leapt to power his header into the back of the net.  1-1

As the 30-minute mark approached, and following a number of attacks from Cirencester, it was the turn of Bassett to mount a couple of attacks down their right flank as Grieve and Pagliaroli combined to reach the corner and win a corner kick that passed through the home box before being recycled to the right channel of the box, where Pagliaroli fired over the bar.

As Cirencester pressed the visitors survived a number of crosses before the busy Pagliaroli intercepted a clearance pass, cut right and fired wide of the far-left post.

In the final few minutes of the half a pass destined for Grieve was headed out by Pitts and from the resulting corner kick, after a couple of defensive blocks, Bell collected and produced some clever footwork to evade a couple of incoming challenges before launching a counter attack.

Half Time:  1-1

The visitors came out of the blocks quickly after the break with Finn Hopkins particularly prominent as he mounted a number of strong runs down the left flank during the early stages.

A Bassett free kick brought a fine save from Ronnie Newbery - diving right to keep it out - but a minute later there was nothing he could do as Kyle Witt cut in from the left flank to send a low cross shot towards the near post where an intended block looped the ball over the helpless Newbery for an OWN GOAL1-2.

Encouraged by their breakthrough the visitors continued to threaten and whilst they ‘won’ a number of corner kicks the home defence stood firm.

Shortly before the hour mark a long ball down the right channel created a 1v1 between Grieve and Newbery that the ‘keeper cleared on the edge of his box.

By this point Cirencester had made three substitutions and reorganised positionally, and as a result their play was a little disjointed but with 15-minutes remaining Jack Horrell sent a cross-field pass to Harley Arnold, 10-yards inside the Bassett half, and he immediately galloped to the right corner before laying the ball back to Harry Titchener who delivered it to the far-left post where an arriving Ross Gabriel headed wide.

Shortly fterwards Harrison Reeves also sent a cross-field pass towards Arnold, near the right channel front edge of the visitor’s box, but an alert Brabham managed to get there first.

A few minutes later Hopkins mounted another strong run down the left channel that culminated in a low shot towards the bottom left post that required a full-length dive from Newbery to save.

As the game was drawing to a close Cirencester put the Bassett defence under pressure but were unable to find a way through the resolute rear-guard and the visitors took the points.

Full Time:   1-2

A hard-fought match that was fairly evenly contested during the first half but became scrappy during the second due to a number of changes for Cirencester.
