Latest report from Gloucesterlive

29 July 2020 at 07:59

Cirencester Town have missed out on two summer transfer targets, but boss John Brough has several hopefuls training ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Former Evesham United midfielder Archie Haskayne and Yate Town captain Nick Peare have both decided not to join the Corinium Stadium club ahead of Brough's first full season at the helm after initially agreeing to sign.

Forwards Lewis Thompson and Toumani Sidibe have both left, while goalkeeper Lewis Clayton has signed for Evesham United and Will Tunnicliff has stepped up a level to join Premier Division Yate.

Brough is running the rule over midfielder Archie Brennan, who was released by Cheltenham in June after one year as a professional.

Hartpury student and ex-Robins scholar Tom Handley has also been at training, along with midfielder Lee Llewelyn, who was also on the books of Cheltenham before a spell at Bishop's Cleeve.

Former North Leigh winger Roger James also looks set to sign, while Aidan Bennett and Ellis Dunton, who both enjoyed long spells with the Centurions before switching to Fairford Town last term, are also back with a view to rejoining.

Winger Oliver Artwell, formerly with Forest Green, is due to train for the first time on Tuesday evening having appeared on loan for Cirencester in 2019/20.

Meanwhile, striker Josh Parsons is fit again after a long-term injury and he has lost more than a stone during lockdown, while experienced defender Shayne Anson is also back in action.

There have been 26 players at the early sessions and Brough has the luxury of being able to field different XIs in two behind-closed-doors friendlies this Saturday, with Stonehouse Town and Longlevens both visiting the Corinium Stadium.

"We are six sessions in and numbers have been good," Brough said. "It's probably the first time I've been at a club at this level and in pre-season I am not chasing players to come to training."

Cirencester were in fine form before the season stopped in March due to the coronavirus outbreak, well-placed to challenge for a play-off finish before the campaign was expunged.

"It was disappointing of course, but there were bigger things out there than football," Brough said. "We were top of the form guide going into lockdown, but we will brush ourselves down, start again and hopefully hit the ground running. I wanted to retain most of the squad from last year and add a few extras, which hopefully I can do before September 19, which is when the new league season starts. As a club it's geared to go up, which is why I took the job in the first place. You have to work hard and we have so far in pre-season, with seven or eight games pencilled in. Fitness levels are key and if you look at our results last year, second half performances were dominant and we definitely have goals in the squad."

Brough, who led Cinderford Town to the Southern League Division One South title in 2015/16, has kept his backroom staff together at the Corinium Stadium.

James Mortimer-Jones continues as assistant manager, with Michael Pook player coach and Scott Rose goalkeeping coach.

Mark Lee has a scouting and recruitment role and Jonny Evans is the physio, while forward and qualified personal trainer Brad Gray is helping out with the strength and conditioning work.
