Grit and determination win the day...

31 January 2017 at 23:56

North Wiltshire Youth Football League

Under 14 Division 3

Cirencester Town U14's   1  v  3   Malmesbury Youth Tornadoes

Today we welcomed Malmesbury to a cold, wet and boggy Corinium Stadium for a return match.

Wary of the potential of Malmesbury, Cirencester looked to start with urgency, good communication, anticipation and hard work although that didn't transpire on the pitch.

Conditions meant that the going was pretty tough... the ball not travelling well and boots getting sucked into the mud. However it was the same for both teams and Malmesbury were pressing Cirencester and playing with intent whilst Cirencester looked laboured and off the pace.

The first goal came 20 minutes in when Malmesbury played a through ball for their attackers to run onto, the keeper came out, the ball was chipped over the keeper and dribbled in, 0-1.

Cirencester had a good attacking opportunity from a free kick, well struck by William, Ben hit the post and Kyle the cross bar. Half-time.

The Cirencester coaches tried to stir some energy and ambition from the players to get back into and take charge of the game although the second half was similar to the first, Malmesbury seemed to have more energy and urgency. The second goal, much the same as the first, over the keepers head 0-2.

Cirencester tried to get things going but passes weren't going to foot and the team weren't keeping their shape and positions. Ben found a through ball to Kyle who knocked on for Luke to score, 1-2.

Here was Cirencester's opportunity to find their mojo and get back into the game but Malmesbury's third goal came from a typical attack down the middle and they seemed to walk through a sleepy defence, 3-1.

A lack lustre performance that would seem to close off any chances of a top 2 finish. There were moments of individual effort although no notable performances today, the team know that they need to play better as a collective to compete with the top teams.

Thanks to all who braved the conditions to watch.
