Cirencester take the points at local rivals Highworth Town.

27 August 2018 at 21:39

Evo-Stik Southern League 2018/19

Division 1 South

Highworth Town  0 – 3  Cirencester Town

Cirencester made the short journey to face Southern League newcomers Highworth Town in this Bank Holiday fixture and came away with the points despite the home side dominating large periods of the second half.

In a very competitive and frantic, ‘end-to-end’ first half both sides had their moments and whilst Highworth struck the underside of the cross-bar it was Cirencester that took the lead shortly before the interval when BEN WHITEHEAD converted a penalty kick.  0-1.

Cirencester created some fine moves in the first quarter but as the half progressed Chris Taylor began to orchestrate the midfield for the home side and as a result Darren Jefferies was seeing plenty of the ball to make charging runs down the left flank.

Late in the half Louis Spalding advanced down the left flank to poke the ball to Whitehead who was bowled over by the covering defender for a penalty kick to be awarded.

The second half was very different as Cirencester threatened early on as Whitehead slipped the ball round an advancing Connor Johns but before he could collect Rory Sproule managed to recover and clear the danger.

Shortly afterwards Henry Spalding fired over the bar but by the mid-point Highworth were dominating possession forcing Cirencester to rely on counter attacks.

As the game entered the final 15 minutes Whitehead pressed in the left corner and managed to lay the ball back to AIDAN BENNETT who cut right and his ‘cross-cum-shot’ dropped inside the top right corner.  0-2.

With 3 minutes of the scheduled 90 minutes remaining a Cirencester throw into the box was won and slipped to HENRY SPALDING who calmly finished inside the right post.  0-3.
