The Centurions made to battle for a point
Uhlsport Hellenic League
Premier Division
Lydney Town 1 - 1 Cirencester Town
The Centurions travelled to The Royal Forest of Dean for the return Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture against LYDNEY TOWN and despite a dominant first half performance they only had a slender lead over their hosts at the interval, and within minutes of the restart it was all-square thanks to a converted Penalty Kick for the hosts and it remained so at the final whistle - despite plenty of action at both ends.
Cirencester kicked-off with the wind behind them and immediately attacked down their right flank before their hosts countered to fire wide – a promising start for both sides.
A few minutes later Cirencester had a Penalty Kick appeal rejected and as the half continued the visitors tried several wind-assisted pots at the target from distance that resulted in fine saves from the home ‘keeper or flew just over.
As the visitors pressed several chances went begging until minutes before the interval when RHYS WELLS finally converted from close-range.
With the strong wind now behind them the home side came out with renewed vigour after the break to press the Cirencester defence and soon levelled the score when a corner kick resulted in a desperate scramble and the award of a Penalty Kick. MATT GREEN smashing the ball into the net from the spot.
Cirencester reacted to the setback to press with more saves from Causon and a goal-line clearance but couldn’t break the deadlock whilst also defending numerous counters from their hosts with Ethan Vaughan particularly prominent.
