The Centurions battling team performance secures the points

Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Longlevens  0 - 1  Cirencester Town

The first ‘away’ match of the New Year took The Centurions to Gloucester to face ‘in-form’ side LONGLEVENS and following a battling team performance in arctic conditions Cirencester returned with the 3-points.

The home side made a positive start as they were awarded a couple of corner kicks in the opening couple of minutes but after surviving the initial pressure Cirencester countered to have several shots blocked before THEO JEREMY made a strong run down the left flank to send a deep cross-shot that dropped over the ‘keeper and inside the far-right post.

The home side responded to the setback to find the Cirencester defence in determined mood as they defended a number of free kicks before mounting attacks down their flanks that led to strikes over the bar or wide of the target.

As the interval approached both sides threatened but were repelled when they reached their respective opponents Penalty Area.

The second half continued in this end-to-end fashion, with neither side retaining the ball for long, and became very ‘tetchy’ with numerous Yellow Cards issued by the Referee and shortly after the 75-minute mark Longlevens fired a Penalty Kick wide of the target.

The final ten minutes was littered with free kicks.

Not a game for the ‘purists’ but full of commitment.
