The Centurions made to battle for the points
Uhlsport Hellenic League
Premier Division
Highworth Town 2 - 3 Cirencester Town
Cirencester made the comparatively short journey into Wiltshire to face near neighbours HIGHWORTH TOWN for their latest Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture and after taking an early lead they were made to battle for the points in the second half as the home side used their home ground knowledge to severely test their visitors resolve.
Cirencester opened the scoring within the first minute as GEORGE PEARE latched onto the ball to produce an instant volley inside the far-left post.
HARLIE PRICE added a second before the 15-minute mark as he rounded the home ‘keeper to finish into the open goal.
Despite the scoreline the home side pushed forward to threaten briefly whilst Cirencester looked the more dangerous – creating a couple more chances and striking the woodwork before the interval.
After the break Highworth used their home ground advantage to severely test the Cirencester defence and as the game entered the final ten scheduled minutes, they finally made the breakthrough when visiting ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery failed to catch a cross-cum-shot from RHYS WELLS for the ball to drop into his own net.
Three minutes later it was all-square as an Oliver Stevenson strike was deflected into the path of ALEX PARSONS who finished from a few yards.
Cirencester responded immediately as a free kick from the left flank was fed across the goalmouth for JONTY WELCH to drive home through a cluster of players.
In the final minutes Nick Peare cleared another home effort off the goal-line for Cirencester to secure the points.
