An OWN GOAL decides Challenge Cup tie

Marsh Sports Insurance (UHL) Challenge Cup
Third Round
Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Royal Wootton Bassett Town
The Centurions faced ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT TOWN at The Talent Hire Stadium as they entered the Challenge Cup at the Third Round stage of the competition and after a competitive game an Own Goal decided the tie.
In awful weather conditions Cirencester made the perfect start with THEO JEREMY bursting along the byline before smashing the ball past the visiting ‘keeper from a narrow angle within the opening minutes.
The visitors equalised nine minutes later when BEN CLEARY latched onto a ball down their right channel and took it into the home box before also scoring from a narrow angle.
Despite the setback the home side continued to press and dominate possession but could not break through a ‘Bassett’ defence that had to replace their injured ‘keeper midway through the half.
A few minutes before the interval ‘Bassett’ were denied a second goal when ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery deflected a fierce strike against his crossbar following a quick counter attack.
There had been glimpses of the Bassett potential during the first half and eight minutes into the second a ball down their right channel was diverted past Newbery to give the visitors the lead due to an OWN GOAL.
As Cirencester continued to press Bassett survived a couple of goalmouth scrambles and the game became scrappy as they countered quickly – putting the home defence under pressure from a series of corner kicks as the game drew to a close.
