Cirencester wasteful as Thornbury recover to share the points

Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Thornbury Town  1 - 1  Cirencester Town

Cirencester’s fourth successive ‘away’ league fixture took them to THORNBURY TOWN and after a difficult match on a very firm pitch, in warm and windy conditions, The Centurions came away with a point.

The visitors attacked their hosts from the start but the very warm conditions and swirling wind, coupled with a very firm pitch, meant that neither side was able to produce flowing football or retain the ball for long and it developed into a ‘scrappy’ match.

Cirencester had an early effort blocked on the home goal-line as they pressed but they were finding it difficult to judge the weight of pass in the swirling wind.

Either side of the Drinks Break the home side produced some neat football but it was Cirencester that opened the scoring when JACK FREEMAN unleashed a fierce strike that ‘keeper Mackenzie Welsh couldn’t prevent entering the net, despite getting a hand to it.

Cirencester continued to press but were guilty of overhitting many passes whilst Thornbury relied on occasional counter attacks.

After the half-time interval it was more of the same with Cirencester dominating possession and the home side countering quickly.

As the game moved into the final quarter Thornbury launched the ball from their right flank to the Penalty Spot where Josh Oliver headed against the right post.

Five minutes later the home side levelled the scoring when HARRY BROCK collected a long clearance to lob the ball over an advancing Newbery.

Despite dominating possession Cirencester wasted numerous chances to score again and the points were shared.
