The Worthians complete the double over Cirencester

Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Highworth Town  2 - 0  Cirencester Town

Cirencester made the short trip down the A419 to face long-time adversaries HIGHWORTH TOWN for the ‘return’ Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture against their near neighbours with plenty of expectation, due to their recent victories against two top-five sides and their narrow defeat in the reverse fixture in August, but unfortunately left their ‘shooting-boots’ behind and paid the price.

The visitors had the better of the early exchanges and created several openings but failed to really test the home keeper, whilst Highworth had one effort blocked before a quick counter attack found CONNOR MATTIMORE in the Cirencester box and he neatly tucked his shot inside the left post to open the scoring.

Following their breakthrough Highworth began to press more often, using the slope to good effect as they launched balls down their flanks, to turn the visitor’s defence.

Cirencester suffered a further setback shortly after the 30-minute mark when they had to make two substitutions for injuries, but continued to work their way forward without really testing their hosts.

The second half was a much more disjointed affair as neither side retained the ball for long and whilst there was some Penalty Area activity both defences stood firm.

Five minutes into ‘added-time’ Highworth secured the clincher when RHYS WELLS latched onto a parried effort to drive it inside the left post.
