Much improved Centurions test The Worthians

Uhlsport Hellenic League
Premier Division
Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Highworth Town
Following their heavy defeat to local rivals Fairford Town in the FA Cup on Saturday, Cirencester returned to Hellenic League – Premier Division action against near neighbours HIGHWORTH TOWN and produced a much-improved performance to severely test their opponents in a highly entertaining match.
Whilst the hosts started positively to probe their visitors it was Highworth that looked the more dangerous in the first quarter and at the mid-point DAN GRIEVE opened the scoring with a smart turn and shot inside the right post.
Ten minutes before the interval Aidan Bennett headed against the bar as Cirencester pressed for an equaliser and five minutes later Sol Pryce also struck the woodwork for the visitors.
Despite some early pressure from their hosts Highworth doubled their tally when DAN GRIEVE produced a clinical finish eight minutes after the break, but Cirencester did not surrender and produced some terrific passing football to test their visitors.
Shortly after the mid-point of the half they were rewarded when JESSE THOMPSON managed to clip the ball into the net at the near post following a corner kick.
Encouraged by their break-through Cirencester continued to press with some excellent football and Lewis Thorne fired narrowly wide of the left post as the game drew to a close, but it was not to be and Highworth survived to take the points.
