It was yet more Hellenic Premier League action at The Talent Hire Stadium on Tuesday evening when CIRENCESTER TOWN entertained a much-improved HALLEN FC, and despite dominating for large periods of the game, they had to settle for a point in a competitive, if not occasionally feisty, 1-1 draw.
Absentees included the injured Jack Freeman, Jack Horrell and Ross Gabriel, while Finley Bell and Theo Jeremy returned to the starting line-up. There were bench places for the brothers Peare, Ethan Rose, Jordan Morris and Javan Matumba.
It was the Centurions who started the game much the stronger, knocking the ball around creatively and looking for chinks in the Hallen rearguard. In the 7th minute, after a fine, mazy run by Fraser Bell, he found the alert Harlie Price but his goal bound strike crashed against the underside of the bar after the faintest of deflections.
The Armadillos then found their feet and created a half chance for front man Elliott Gardner, but his effort flashed past the right-hand post.
That was followed by a neat run and cross by Theo Jeremy, but Price could only watch his firm contact clear the bar.
The first 20 or so minutes became quite ill-tempered, with a couple of Hallen players making reckless tackles that, for some inexplicable reason, went unpunished.
On 25 minutes, after another neat dribble by the tricky Fraser Bell, he picked out the industrious Jonty Welch but the ball just ran away from him.
A few moments later, somewhat against the run of play, Hallen took the lead. A slick move involving Syd Camper and Harry Barter led to a firm shot by the dangerous Gardner. It was Armadillos midfielder HARRY GOLDSPINK who reacted quickest, drilling the rebound past Ciren ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery.
Camper then found space on the right where he drifted inside to unleash a fizzer that was goal bound all but for a brilliant reaction save by Newbery.
Cirencester equalised shortly after when a rasping shot by Fraser Bell was parried and HARLIE PRICE was on hand to slot home from 5 yards.
One minute later, Theo Jeremy went on a superb cross field dribble, passing a number of Hallen defenders. The ball eventually found its way through to Price who finished with aplomb, only to be greeted by the linesman’s flag signalling offside.
The second half was something of a damp squib. Hallen dropped deeper and deeper, relying on occasional counter attacks, while the Centurions huffed and puffed with plenty of possession and some nice quick-feet passing, particularly from the Bell brothers and Joe Turley, but sadly no quality finish. Substitute Jordan Morris also created a number of quality crosses from the left, but most of these were either gathered by Hallen ‘keeper Harry Thomas-Barker or just failed to connect with the onrushing Price.
At the final whistle it was certainly a case of a well-earned point for Hallen but a slight whiff of two points dropped for the Centurions.
