The First Round of The Isuzu FA Vase brought Southampton based MILLBROOK FC of the Wessex League – Premier Division to The Talent Hire Stadium and despite a dominant, but frustrating, performance from the home side a place in the hat for the Second Round was secured by the visitors with a goal scored just before the hour mark.

As this match is thought to be the first time the Clubs have met it is appropriate to review their form and this reveals that they play their football in the Wessex League – Premier Division (the same level to Cirencester) and currently sit in 13th place in the table with 12 points from 11 games played (4 wins and 7 defeats).

In comparison Cirencester also sit in 13th place in the Hellenic League - Premier Division with 16 points from 13 games played (4 wins, 4 draws and 5 defeats).

In terms of personnel Cirencester are without top scorer Harlie Price (holiday) and midfielders Jack Horrell and Jack Freeman (both injured) and as a result George Peare returns (after a long injury absence) in place of Price, and Harrison Reeves and Ethan Rose replace the midfielders.

Millbrook kicked-off playing towards The Shed end of the ground and after launching the ball down their left flank they lost possession enabling Cirencester to counter down their right flank but progress was brought to a premature end as Theo Jeremy was brought to ground with the culprit receiving a stern lecture from the Referee.

Fraser Bell sent the resulting free kick towards the far-left post where visiting ‘keeper Jon Webb punched it clear. It was quickly recycled and sent back into the visitor’s box – once again Webb punched it clear.

When the visitor’s countered to the right corner through Scott Hills his cross was blocked by Ed Scott and fed to Aidan Bennett to be worked forward before a free kick was awarded to Cirencester.

Seven minutes into the match Cirencester were awarded the first corner kick, from their left flank, and Fraser Bell sent it into the mix where Webb caught it.

The visitors responded as Jamie White received the ball in the right channel and shot – blocked by Scott but worked to Ryan Batley who had his shot from 20 yards blocked by Kyle Pitts.

Shortly afterwards Ethan Rose darted towards the right corner, behind an opponent, and Fraser Bell clipped the ball down the flank and this resulted in Jeremy cutting across the pitch before supplying Harrison Reeves who shot at the target – blocked by Webb for a corner kick.

Cirencester continued to press as they worked their flanks before firing over the target whilst Millbrook countered by launching long balls forward for Hills and White to fire fierce strikes wide of the left post.

Much of the Cirencester play had been down their right flank with the Bell brothers and Jeremy prominent but after the mid-point their left flank became more involved as Reeves had a few pots at goal – deflected for a corner kick, caught by Webb, diverted to clip the outside of the left post.

As the interval loomed Millbrook mounted an attack as Callum Drake intercepted a pass near half-way, left flank, and he played the ball forward to White who instantly moved it on to the marauding Bobby Gorman who made ground down the left channel before sending a low cross towards the far-right post where an incoming Hills just failed to make contact.

The visitors ‘keeper was by far the busier as he punched or caught shots and crosses, although Ronnie Newbery left his box a couple of times to clear long balls over his defence.

Despite dominating possession in the first half Cirencester had nothing to show for their efforts.

Half Time:   0-0

When Cirencester kicked-off the second half Pitts launched the ball down the left flank before it was worked right and lost for the visitors to mount an attack as Drake delivered a cross from their left flank towards the near post where White failed to make contact.

The Cirencester reply was immediate as Bennett delivered a cross-field pass to Jeremy and he cut along the right byline before shooting over the bar.

A few minutes later Cirencester created another opportunity as the ball was released quickly – Finley Bell forward to Jeremy, instant pass back to Bell who immediately played it left to Reeves who darted into the left channel of the visitor’s box and shot – Webb dived to his left to make the low save.

Shortly afterwards Millbrook were working their way along their right flank with ‘throw-ins’ and after the ball was delivered into the home box to be headed clear by Pitts it was then returned into the box with the intention of being worked to the other flank but the ball was lost and fed to JAMIE WHITE who quickly turned, 10 yards from the left post, to poke it inside the far-right post.  0-1.

A few minutes later Cirencester were awarded a free kick that Reeves delivered from the right channel, 25 yards out, towards the right post where Jonty Welch produced a clever flick that Webb managed to divert for a corner kick that was eventually sent back into the visitor’s box for Webb to grab at the second attempt – receiving a knock from an incoming George Peare in the process.

At the mid-point of the half Cirencester were awarded a free kick, 30 yards out right flank, that Fraser Bell delivered to the Penalty Spot where Peare rose to head wide of the left post.

As in the first half Cirencester were constantly pressing their opponents as Reeves fired wide of the right post before 30-minutes into the half, Fraser Bell embarked on a run to the right corner to ‘win’ a corner kick that Reeves sent into the box – cleared to Bennett who moved it left to Jordan Morris and he delivered a cross with the outside of his left foot that caused the ball to ‘spin’ past a defender and was nearly collected by the busy Welch at the right post but resulted in another corner kick. This corner kick was played to Fraser Bell who struck a fierce shot wide of the left post from the right channel, 15-yards out.

A minute later Alfonso Dias was fouled just outside the Millbrook box and Jeremy took the free kick which was deflected over the bar for a corner kick that Webb pushed away from his goal to be cleared and a counter attack to follow as Tommy Nelson charged down their left channel with Scott in hot pursuit. As Nelson reached the home box Scott stumbled and Nelson shot – an advancing Newbery blocked, with the ball rebounding to White, 25-yards out, who instantly fired at the target for Newbery to save with his outstretched leg.

The action was soon at the other end as Pitts sent a free kick into the Millbrook box – to the far-left post – where Peare’s looping header was pushed over his bar by Webb. The ‘keeper then pushed the corner kick away from his goal.

As the game was drawing to a close Millbrook threatened with close range efforts from White and Drake before a firm shot from Josh Ball was caught by Newbery.

In the closing minutes Webb punched a Morris cross clear, collected another that had been diverted to him and then gathered a Dias volley after a Peare header had dropped into the youngsters path.

Full Time:   0-1

Despite plenty of effort a disappointing result and frustrating game for the home support, given the amount of possession, but it was not to be and The Dockers move into the next round.
