For their latest Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture The Centurions returned to The Talent Hire Stadium to face LYDNEY TOWN and after scoring just before the interval, and two more within minutes of the re-start, they went on to secure a comprehensive victory.

Prior to the match a review of the respective performance to date of the two teams revealed that LYDNEY TOWN sat in 20th position in the league table having obtained 5 points from the 12 games they have played so far, whilst their hosts were in 14th place with 13 points from the same number of games.

However, in their last three league games Lydney have drawn with Longlevens (2-2), suffered a narrow defeat to high-flying Droitwich Spa (1-2) and defeated Royal Wootton Bassett Town (3-0) - so should not be under-estimated.

Last season The Centurions recorded a 3-1 victory at home but lost by the same scoreline at Lydney.

Cirencester kicked-off playing towards The Arena end of the ground and immediately attacked down their right flank as Theo Jeremy was released for a run down his flank - but once the ball was lost the visitors worked the ball up to the experienced Mike Symons who held off his challengers to slip the ball to Jordan Sheen, as he burst forward down the right channel of the home Penalty Area, but he was quickly surrounded for the threat to be dealt with.

Within minutes the home side attacked down their right flank again before working it across the pitch to the left corner for a deep cross to be sent towards the far-right post - but too long resulting in a goal-kick.

With 7-minutes on the clock Cirencester once again worked the ball down their right flank as Fraser Bell over-lapped to reach the corner before cutting back to deliver a left footed cross towards the near post where a fast-arriving Harlie Price sent a glancing header over the bar.

A couple of minutes later Jeremy produced a clever back-heel volley into the path of Fraser Bell as he once again charged down the right flank to the corner but his cross was intercepted and cleared.

At the 10-minute mark Jeremy cut in from his flank to run across the front edge of the visitor’s box and as he neared the centre, he slipped the ball into the path of Price as he moved down the right channel to instantly shoot – just over the top right corner of the goal-frame.

A couple of minutes later Lydney suffered a setback as their target man, Symons, went down injured and had to be replaced by former Centurion and current Manager - the prolific Lee Smith.

Cirencester continued to work their right flank without success and shortly before the mid-point of the half an overhit back-pass put home ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery under pressure as he had to chest the ball down near his right post before he could clear it down the right flank.

Leading up to the half-hour mark play became scrappy for a while as neither side retained possession for long but a few minutes later a superb low pass from Jonty Welch found Jeremy as he cut left into the right channel of the visitor’s box to shoot – blocked, rebounding to Finley Bell who fired over the target.

Almost immediately Finley Bell was involved again as he released Jeremy for a run along the right byline that produced a corner kick and an aerial challenge that resulted in a collision of heads and injury delay.

Another period of scrappy play followed before Jack Horrell delivered another superb pass to Jeremy who embarked on a run to the right corner before crossing towards the back post where Price was arriving to stretch and volley wide of the left post.

Moments before the interval pressure from Jeremy resulted in the ball breaking to Price but his instant effort was blocked by ‘keeper Alex Causon before being recycled to Welch who fired wide of the target.

As the half entered ‘added-time’ Cirencester punted the ball down the right channel to drop short of the visitors box and bounce over a defender, encouraging Causon to leave his box to head before Price could collect and as a result his header, under pressure from Price, didn’t get the distance he had hope for and it dropped into the path of FINLEY BELL who instantly tucked it into the empty goal with his left foot.

Half Time:   1-0

It had been a frustrating first half for the home side as they had had plenty of possession but were guilty of over-playing and delaying passes until it was too late to make them – and presumably there had been a ‘discussion’ during the interval as within five minutes of the re-start Cirencester had added two goals.

Two minutes after the interval Cirencester worked the ball from left to right with superb quick passing involving many players to release Jeremy to the right corner where he moved along the byline before pulling the ball back to Finley Bell, right channel front edge of the visitor’s box, who fired at the target. As the strike neared the 6-yard box HARLIE PRICE performed a clever back-heel to divert it into the net.  2-0.

Three minute later a Cirencester corner kick from their right flank was delivered by Jack Freeman to the near post where it was headed away from the goal - to be collected by Finley Bell and supplied to THEO JEREMY who worked his way along the byline before blasting the ball into the net from a narrow angle.  3-0.

Encouraged Welch had a shot caught by Causon, Finley Bell fired wide of the target and Harrison Reeves sent a low cross from Price over from 8 yards – but shortly before the mid-point the ball was worked left to Reeves who burst into the left channel of the visitor’s box to shoot towards the far-right post where a supporting HARLIE PRICE was arriving to tuck inside the post.  4-0.

Cirencester then kept possession for a while without going anywhere although a quick change enabled Price to slip the ball to Jeremy who fired into the side netting from a tight angle.

After another period of ‘keep-ball’ the ball was supplied to Reeves who reached the left channel of the visitor’s box to shoot – blocked, rebounding back to him to shoot again – diverted for a corner kick from the left. The kick was played to the near post, returned and sent into the box where it eventually fell to THEO JEREMY who struck a fierce shot from the edge of the box at the target and whilst Causon got a hand to it he couldn’t prevent it crossing the line.  5-0.

Despite this further setback Lydney kept trying and were rewarded with a couple of corner kicks – the second of which Oliwier Fusiek headed over the target.

As the game was drawing to a close Ed Scott, who had produced a number of long cross-field passes during the game (in addition to his impeccable defending) clipped the ball down the left channel where it dropped between defender and advanced ‘keeper – GEORGE PEARE nipped between his two opponents and immediately fired the ball from 30-yards inside the right post to complete the scoring.

Full Time:   6-0

After a frustrating first half Cirencester made the perfect start to the second as they moved the ball about quicker to be more incisive.
