Match report by Dave Pyzer
The Second Round Qualifying fixture of The Isuzu FA Vase took The Centurions to Bristol to meet MANGOTSFIELD UNITED and after an entertaining match it was the visitors that secured a place in the next round of the competition.
The sides met a couple of weeks ago at The Talent Hire Stadium in the Uhlsport Hellenic League when Cirencester secured a 2-0 victory but The Mangos would undoubtedly be a different proposition as they look to avenge this defeat on their 3G pitch that was installed last season.
Cirencester kicked-off proceedings and launched the ball to their left corner to be headed clear and eventually worked back to ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery to start again.
A period of aerial football followed before Cirencester released Theo Jeremy for a run down the right flank before he cut inside to send the ball across the pitch towards the space on the left flank – bringing home ‘keeper Will Tubbs out of his box to clear off the pitch before Harlie Price could reach it.
The visitors pressed their hosts again as Jeremy’s low strike was gathered at his left post by Tubbs before the ‘keeper was forced into urgent action to clear a ‘back-pass’ as Price once again closed quickly.
Seven minutes into the contest The Mangos worked the ball down their left flank to deliver a cross into the right channel of the Cirencester box where Aidan Bennett headed clear but as it was worked forward a free kick was conceded and this resulted in a dangerous cross from Olly Sully passing through the visitors 6-yard box and past the far-left post without contact.
The home side were soon back again as they reached the left corner to launch a throw-in towards Mircea Ilea in the visitor’s box - they then tried their right flank as Josh Jenkins, James White and Rudy Hill combined for the latter to send a cross into the Cirencester box – both attacks resulting in a goal-kick.
The Centurions responded to these attacks by working the ball down their right flank with a clever Finley Bell flick releasing Jeremy for a run towards the right corner but as he reached the front corner of the box he was brought to ground resulting in a free kick. Jack Horrell delivered the kick towards the near post where HARLIE PRICE darted forward to head over Tubbs but under the bar to open the scoring. 0-1.
The Mangos replied as they worked their left flank to launch another throw-in into the visitor’s box, for a corner kick to follow, that Newbery gathered at the second attempt.
Shortly before the mid-point of the half Harrison Reeves collected a loose ball and embarked on a weaving run before he was brought to ground just outside the home box. Jack Horrell drove the kick towards the right post - Tubbs parried and an alert ED SCOTT responded quickest to drive the rebound into the net. 0-2.
The further setback prompted a response from The Mangos that required determined blocks from The Centurions to keep them out – as shots, crosses and throw-ins into the box followed.
Not to be outdone Cirencester countered to the right corner and were awarded a free kick when Tubbs handled outside his box – the kick was cleared to Reeves who immediately dribbled back towards the home box for another free kick to be awarded. Theo Jeremy took the kick and it was diverted for a corner kick that eventually resulted in a goal-kick.
As the half was drawing to a close there was still time for a couple of multi-pass moves from Cirencester that yielded a near miss from Price, a corner kick and a ‘goal’ that was disallowed for ‘offside’.
Just before the interval Mangotsfield pressed for White to shoot over the target from 25-yards.
Half Time: 0-2
The Mangos pressed from the re-start as Hill clipped the ball to the left corner for Jeffrey Barimah to collect and deliver into the Cirencester box – cleared, to be recycled and cleared again, for the Bell brothers to combine and supply Reeves but his low shot was saved by Tubbs.
Almost immediately Barimah reached the left byline to ‘win’ a corner kick that Kyle Pitts headed clear before Bennett intercepted a cross-field pass to mount another counter and cross through the 6-yard box from Fraser Bell.
Cirencester then probed the front edge of the home box and as the hour-mark approached the home side responded as Barimah crossed (caught by Newbery) and embarked on a run that resulted in a corner kick and cross that Jacob Spence headed wide of the right post.
The visitors replied as Price headed on to Jeremy who crossed to the far-left post where Jordan Morris collected to clip towards the 6-yard box – deflected onto the post before Tubbs caught.
The game continued in an ‘end-to-end’ fashion as Finley Bell had a shot saved and Sully fired wide of the far-right post.
The Mangos were soon back as Cosmo Browne crossed for Newbery to punch and then Michael Barry galloped from right to left to release the ball to Sully, and on to Barimah who shot over the top left corner.
At this point Cirencester mounted another multi-pass move as Jeremy laid the ball back to Fraser Bell who clipped it down the right flank to Finley Bell, forward to an overlapping Fraser Bell who reached the byline before delivering a low cross into the 6-yard box where HARLIE PRICE arrived to finish from close range. 0-3.
As the game entered ‘added-time’ Barimah charged down the left flank but his progress was brought to a halt and a free kick awarded that was delivered to the front edge of the visitor’s 6-yard box where a scramble to ensued before JACOB SPENCE provided the final touch. 1-3.
A couple of minutes later Jack Freeman collected a loose ball and sent it right for Alfonso Dias to drive down the right channel before firing a fierce shot that struck the bottom of the right post and rebounded across the goal-mouth.
In the final minutes of the match Elliott Keightley sent a superb pass down the centre for Price to collect and lay off to JONTY WELCH and he struck a low shot that also struck the right post before rebounding across the goal – but this time inside the left post to complete the scoring.
Full Time: 1-4
The home side pushed forward whenever possible but couldn’t break down their visitor’s defence whilst Cirencester looked dangerous throughout.
