Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Cirencester Town  2 - 0  Mangotsfield United

Match report by Dave Pyzer

Former Southern League opponents MANGOTSFIELD UNITED were the latest visitors to The Talent Hire Stadium for an Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture and after an entertaining game the home side secured their second successive league victory of the current campaign.

Prior to this match Mangotsfield United sat in 5th place in the Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division Table with 13 points from their 6 matches whilst Cirencester had obtained 5 points from their 7 games to sit in 15th place – having secured their first victory of the league season last week at Cinderford Town. (1-4).

Interim Manager, John Brough, had named a starting eleven that had a couple of changes to it (compared to last week), in terms of personnel and positions, with former ‘keeper Alex Harris signed in mid-week (on loan from Evesham United as he seeks match fitness), and Jack Lewis promoted from the U18’s to a seat on the bench.

In terms of positional changes – Fraser Bell returned to right back (Elliott Keightley unavailable), and Aidan Bennett continued at left back with Jordan Morris (returning from injury) playing on the left wing.

The home side kicked off playing towards The Arena end of the ground and immediately attacked to the left corner and once the threat was repelled they tried the right flank.

The first threat on goal came from the hosts as Kyle Pitts launched the ball to the right front corner of the visitor’s box where Theo Jeremy chased to collect and took to the byline before crossing for ‘keeper Hugo Kemmerly to gather at his left post.

Six minutes into the contest Cirencester mounted another attack as the ball was played from their left channel towards the right channel front edge of the visitor’s box where JONTY WELCH collected, before moving forward into the area as he composed himself, to tuck the ball inside the far-left - post past the advancing Kemmery.  1-0.

A couple of minutes later Aidan Bennett and Jordan Morris exchanged passes as they worked their way to the left corner for Morris to cross – diverted for a corner kick that Fraser Bell delivered to the back post where it eventually reached Welch but his strike was blocked and cleared.

The visitors replied as they mounted a counter attack to their left corner where Pitts dealt with the threat.

Shortly afterwards a Mangos free kick from their right flank, 10 yards inside the home half, was delivered to the far-left post for Mircea Ilea to head towards goal but ‘keeper Alex Harris comfortably caught it.

Cirencester continued to press with Jack Freeman reaching the left byline to pull the ball back to Welch who fired a left footed strike from the left channel of the visitor’s box that was collected by Jeremy who then saw his effort saved by Kemmery.

As the mid-point of the half approached, Cirencester produced a flowing move down their left flank as Bennett headed the ball to Welch, left to Morris, forward to Freeman, right to Harlie Price, back to a supporting Welch who shot over the bar from 20 yards.

The visitor’s replied with a couple of quick counter attacks but both were collected by Harris.

The home side responded by mounting another couple of attacks as Ed Scott delivered a superb pass to the left corner before the resulting cross was headed over by Freeman, soon to be followed by Jeremy making a run along the right byline that was defended.

The pressure was mounting and shortly afterwards Welch rode a tackle near the centre circle, slipped the ball to HARLIE PRICE who exchanged it with him, as he moved into the visitor’s box, before evading an incoming challenge and clipping it into the net.  2-0.

A Drinks Break followed but when play resumed Pitts sent a low pass to Freeman and he slipped the ball into the path of Jeremy who fired it into the bottom right corner but it was disallowed for ‘offside’.

A few minutes later the visitors mounted an attack down their right flank but Jack Horrell was quick to spot the danger and made a determined run across the pitch to deal with the threat.

As the half was drawing to a close a Morris strike was caught by Kemmery, and a couple of Mangotsfield attacks were cleared by the home defence.

Half Time:   2-0

Mangotsfield made a couple of substitutions during the interval and when they kicked-off they immediately attacked to their left corner before playing the ball inside to Spike Weaver but the flag was raised for ‘offside’ so the threat ended.

Cirencester replied as Jeremy received a quick throw-in on the left flank and darted to the left channel of the visitor’s box before firing narrowly wide of the far-right post.

Another couple of home attacks then resulted in corner kicks that were defended before Mangotsfield managed to get the ball in the home net - a pass from the right flank, 35 yards out, reached Weaver in the left channel of the home box and he provided the finish but was declared to be ‘offside’.

A couple of minutes later Price stepped over a low pass from Pitts for Freeman to chase - Rudy Hill saw the danger and covered to clear off the park and around the hour the visitor’s pressed the home defence who stood firm – Kyrese Morrison slipped the ball left to josh Jenkins who sent it forward for Jeffrey Barimah to collect as he darted to the left corner but his resulting cross landed on the top of the home net.

The Cirencester reply was immediate as Price worked his way forward down the left channel until he neared the left post but his strike struck the post and rebounded to Welch who took it to the byline where his attempted cross was blocked.

Around the mid-point of the half Bell released Jeremy for a run to the corner and delivered a cross to the Penalty Spot for Scott to send his glancing header wide of the left post.

Shortly afterwards Freeman produced some neat footwork to evade a couple of challenges inside the visitors half before sending the ball down the left channel for Ethan Rose to chase but Ilea came across to clear the danger.

Cirencester were soon back again as Jeremy slipped the ball to an over-lapping Bell who worked his way along the byline before firing the ball into the side-netting.

As the game entered the final quarter Mangotsfield produced some neat inter-passing football involving Cosmo Brownie and Barimah but it ended in a goal-kick to Cirencester.

With nothing to lose the visitors pressed forward with Jacob Spence launching a throw-in into the home box that was initially headed out by Scott for Horrell to complete the clearance with an overhead kick for Jeremy to chase.

In the final minutes Harry Titchener won the ball near half-way and released Price who cut right and shot – deflected to Kemmery.

In added-time Weaver fired wide of the far-right post for the Mango’s and Nick Peare headed the ball twice before releasing Jeremy who had his shot blocked to Bell who also had his shot blocked at the right post.

Full Time:   2-0

A positive and entertaining performance from the hosts who secured their second successive victory in the league.

There were glimpses of the potential of the visitors that Cirencester need to take on board as they meet again in two weeks in the FA Vase competition.
