Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Cinderford Town  1 - 4  Cirencester Town

Match report produced by Dave Pyzer

Cirencester made the journey across the County to meet CINDERFORD TOWN at The Causeway in their latest Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture and battled hard to overcome their hosts and the dreadful weather conditions to record their first league victory of the season.

Prior to this match The Foresters sat in 7th place in the league table with 11 points from the 7 games they have played so far whilst Cirencester have obtained 2 points from their previous 6 games to sit in 19th place - but there has always been a healthy rivalry between the sides over the many years they have competed against each other in whatever league or cup competition -so what will today bring.

The match was played in dreadful conditions throughout as the predicted rain arrived to make control difficult on a very hard surface.

Cirencester kicked off playing into the rain and immediately attacked down their left flank to reach the corner and once cleared they switched to the right flank as Theo Jeremy was released for a run to the corner.

When this was cleared it was played up to Kian Davies who quickly turned for a run down the left channel before delivering a cross-field pass towards an overlapping Blaine Waugh but it picked up pace from the surface to go out for throw-in to Cirencester.

During the next few minutes, the visitors pressed with Jeremy and Elliott Keightley prominent but at the ten-minute mark Cinderford countered to reach the left corner - yielding a corner kick that visiting ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery punched away from his goal - but it was quickly recycled for a scramble, before being cleared, returned, and cleared again from near the goal-line.

Cirencester responded as Jeremy was brought down inside the home half. The free kick was quickly played down the left channel to Jeremy who fired a thunderbolt at the home goal for Lewis Adams to parry. The ball was then recycled for Harlie Price to shoot but it was blocked and collected by Fraser Bell who was quickly surrounded ending the threat.

The visitors continued to work their flanks through Jeremy and Bell, with the latter delivering a cross to the back post where a stretching Price headed into the side-netting.

Leading up to the mid-point of the half Cirencester pressed and Cinderford mounted quick counter attacks - a flick from Joe Cattermole to Kian Davies and a cross-field pass that was intercepted, and a pass from Kian Davies to Cattermole that resulted in a shot towards the left post that Newbery gathered.

At the mid-point of the half Adams fumbled a long ball into his box, under pressure from Price and Jack Freeman, and Price tucked the loose ball into the net from a narrow angle – but it was disallowed and a free kick awarded to Cinderford.

A few minutes later the visitors did open their account as THEO JEREMY collected a goal kick moved left and from 20-yards smashed the ball inside the bottom right post.  0-1.

The home sides reply was a ball to the right corner that was played back to Vine who crossed towards the front edge of the Cirencester box where it was cleared to Kian Davies but he fired over the bar.

During the next five minutes Cirencester were awarded a couple of free kicks – the first was worked to Bell who worked his way along the left byline before sending a low cross through the home box without contact and the second was eventually collected by Keightley who crossed into the box for Adams to catch.

Within minutes a Cinderford corner kick from the right was punched by Newbery but resulted in a scramble in front of his goal before it was cleared downfield by Bell.

As the interval loomed Freeman intercepted a home pass on half-way, fed it to Welch who sent it right to Jeremy. A run to the front corner of the box followed before he cut left and supplied the ball to Bell who fired over the bar from 15 yards.

Into ‘added-time’ and a long ball to the left channel of the home box resulted in an aerial contest between Ismail Yakubu and Freeman, with ball eventually being collected by HARLIE PRICE and he produced a sharp turn to evade an incoming challenge before driving the ball into the net from 12 yards.  0-2.

Half Time:   0-2

After the interval Cinderford pressed hard to open their account as they tested the Cirencester defence – with Ed Scott making a couple of early clearances – the second following a neat move from the hosts as Owen Taylor exchanged passes with Ryan Hillier before supplying Powell who fired at the target from near the right byline for Scott to clear in front of his goal.

A few minutes later Hillier collected the ball and charged to the right-side edge of the visitor’s box to shoot but Newbery had it covered at his left post.

Leading up to the hour-mark the home side continued to press with Kian Davies firing a couple of efforts wide of the target and Powell heading wide of the left post.

Where Cirencester had dominated the first half and the home side had relied on counter attacks it was the other way round in the second and shortly before the mid-point Cirencester countered down their left flank as Harrison Reeves moved the ball inside for Welch to send it to the left corner where Bell ‘won’ a corner kick, as he moved along the byline, that was cleared.

A few minutes later McCauley Power delivered the ball from the right flank into the visitor’s box where LEWIS POWELL collected and rifled it into the bottom left corner.  1-2.

Cirencester responded as Welch sent a pass left for Reeves to take to the left corner, before sending it across the front edge of the 6-yard box – but Welch, who had made a 40-yard run to support, was just unable to make contact.

Adam Davies then sent a free kick into the Cirencester box for Scott to launch downfield for Price to pluck out of the air and slip left to a charging Reeves who carried it into the home box where his shot was parried by Adams and cleared by Vine before Price could reach it.

Following another period of pressure from the home side Nick Peare slipped the ball to Reeves who made another strong run to the left channel of the home box before sending it to the front edge of the box where a supporting Welch made a measured strike towards the bottom left post – parried by Adams and cleared.

A couple of minutes later Welch made a challenge for the ball to break to NICK PEARE and he struck a tremendous shot from 30-yards that bounced in front of a diving Adams before nestling inside the right post.  1-3.

Several substitutions took place leading up to the final whistle but before it was blown there was still time for FRASER BELL to block a pass near the centre circle and embark on a long run to the home box where he rounded an advancing Adams to tuck the ball into the empty net.

Full Time:   1-4

A competitive match in difficult conditions - a ‘game of two halves’ as the saying goes with Cirencester dominating the first and Cinderford pressing in the second to test their visitor’s defensive resolve.
