Following Saturday’s 0-0 draw in The Emirates FA Cup – Extra Preliminary Round the replay took The Centurions to The Rivermoor Stadium where the home side scored two goals to secure victory.
Reading made six changes to their starting eleven when compared to Saturday, whilst Cirencester made three (due to injuries).
Within a few minutes of kick-off Harrison Reeves forced an early corner kick which was curled in towards the Penalty area where Muhamadou Ceesay headed clear for the loose ball to be collected on the edge of the box and fired over the bar.
The home side responded as Ashleigh Artwell headed goalwards for ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery to palm away from his goal and Ben Holder to collect, charge forward and strike – George Peare made a goal-line clearance before sending it downfield.
During the next few minutes Reading increased the pressure as George Armstrong was set-up by Ellis Cowd and Ceesay for a couple of strikes that were blocked. Moments later Holder curved a tidy ball towards the top corner but Newbery made a tremendous save to push it away.
Following an attack from Cirencester Hamish Thompson launched the ball clear for Artwell to collect and charge down the left flank to shoot – another one-handed save from Newbery.
Shortly before the mid-point of the half Stefan Brown struck a low shot that rebounded off the post for Ceesay to finish but it was ruled ‘offside’.
Moments later home ‘keeper Charlie York got in a bit of trouble but Cirencester were unable to take advantage and the home side then mounted a flurry of shots with the last chance falling to Armstrong but Newbery bravely dropped down to deny him.
Cirencester responded by mounting an attack down their left flank as Kyle Pitts and Jordan Morris combined to supply Harlie Price but an advancing York deflected the effort over his bar.
A couple of corner kicks followed but the home goal remained intact.
During the next ten minutes Newbery blocked another strike from Armstrong before Artwell managed to get round him and strike the post – Ceesay fired the rebound over the bar.
Just before the interval Cirencester were awarded a free kick on the edge of the home box, for a foul on Reeves, but Aidan Bennett dragged it wide of the target.
Half Time: 0-0
During the break Cirencester made their first substitution as defender Elliott Keightley replaced midfielder Jack Freeman enabling them to employ George Peare in a more attacking role.
Two minutes after the interval The Cityzen’s opened their account as a long throw-in taken by Eddie Lazarczuk was flicked on by Hamish Thompson for ELLIS COWD to score from close range. 1-0.
Cirencester reacted to the setback to press the home defence as Jack Horrell fired in a couple of shots that were blocked, George Peare a long-range effort that flew over the bar and Harlie Price had one cleared off the line.
A couple of minutes after the mid-point of the half Ceesay embarked on a run before moving the ball on for Lazarczuk to cross into the box - Newbery palmed it away and Armstrong buried it into the Cirencester net – ruled out for ‘offside’.
The home side were soon back again as Joel Valentin sprinted down the right channel before switching play to Lazarczuk who curled a shot in from 20-yards that was just wide of the post.
As the game entered the final 15-minutes a well-worked move from Reading ended with a STEFAN BROWN strike into the bottom corner to double the lead. 2-0.
A few minutes later a dangerous ball from Aidan Bennett was cleared by Jenson Mansel and in the final minutes two players were dismissed, for separate incidents, from a game that had been competitive but not overly-so.
Full Time: 2-0
The home side dominated much of the match and deservedly move into the next round of the competition.
Good Luck to READING CITY in the next round and for the rest of the season.
