Pre-Season Friendly

Cirencester Town  2 - 4  Swindon Supermarine

Match report by Dave Pyzer

The final Pre-Season Friendly, in preparation for the 2025-26 Season, brought neighbours SWINDON SUPERMARINE to The Talent Hire Stadium and after a competitive game it was the visitors from the Southern League – South Division that secured victory.

Similar to The Centurions at the beginning of last season Supermarine are having to re-group for the new season, as following their relegation from the Premier Division they have appointed Bobby Wilkinson as their new Manager, and he is building a new team.

Cirencester were without a number of more experienced players due to holidays and once again included a number of U18’s on their bench.

The home side kicked off playing towards The Arena end of the ground and were soon awarded a corner kick that resulted in a shot that cleared the bar.

Not to be outdone the visitors responded as Piotr Petrynski delivered a cross-field pass from their left flank, 15 yards inside his own half, to the right corner where Jonny Efedje collected and sent a low cross through the home box without contact.

Moments later Supermarine opened the scoring when a strong run from Sal Abubakar down the left flank was brought to an end as he cut into the home Penalty Area – resulting in a Penalty Kick. JAMES HARDING stepped forward to smash the ball towards the left side of the goal and despite young ‘keeper, Josh Sawyer, getting his hands to it he was unable to keep it out of his net.  0-1.

Cirencester reacted positively to the setback as they produced a couple of neat passing moves, involving several players, down their flanks but were thwarted as they approached the Supermarine box.

Shortly after the mid-point of the half Danne Warre mounted a quick counter attack down the right flank and into the home box, where he stopped abruptly to evade an opponent’s challenge, before passing the ball towards the Penalty Spot for JAMES HARDING to finish inside the right post.  0-2.

The half continued ‘end-to-end’ as both sides pressed forward but the defences stood firm.

Half Time:   0-2

During the interval ‘Marine’ made several substitutions whilst Cirencester continued with the side that had finished the first half.

Cirencester started the second period on the front foot with an early corner kick, some neat football and a run from Harlie Price along the left byline but his pass towards the Penalty Spot was intercepted.

Almost immediately a ‘Marine’ back pass from the centre circle was collected by HARLIE PRICE and he promptly lobbed the stranded ‘keeper from 35 yards to reduce the deficit.  1-2.

Supermarine’s reaction to the home side’s goal was immediate as a ball down the right channel was collected and taken to the right byline before it was crossed to the front edge of the home 6-yard box where DAVID REGULA arrived to finish.  1-3.

A minute later another quick counter attack from the visitors also resulted in a goal as a through ball down their right flank was collected by JAMES HARDING and he rounded the home ‘keeper before tucking the ball into the empty net.  1-4.

Following the two strikes the visitors began to dominate play leading up to the hour mark but Cirencester rallied following a couple of substitutions. Fraser Bell switched flanks and intercepted a pass before embarking on a run to the left corner – his left footed cross was diverted for a corner kick that was defended.

A few minutes later Jack Horrell made two low tackles to win and retain the ball before sending a cross-field pass to the left corner where Ollie Pitt collected, cut right and shot – blocked.

More neat play followed as Pitt sent the ball wide to Ethan Rose who moved it on to Kelsea Mubari, centre front edge of the visitor’s box, and he slipped it to Price who was tripped as he looked to shoot – Penalty Kick. HARLIE PRICE got back to his feet and calmly stroked the spot kick inside the right post.  2-4.

As the game moved into the final ten minutes Cirencester produced another neat move – Bell cross-field pass to Rose, left to Harry Titchener, left to Pitt who fired a shot narrowly wide of the left post from 30 yards.

In the final minutes Supermarine pressed again to be rewarded with a couple of corner kicks but the final header was wide of the target.

Full Time:   2-4

Another entertaining game with the visitors enjoying some periods of dominance whilst proving to be quick, direct and clinical.

Despite having a depleted squad Cirencester competed well and produced some neat intricate quick passing football.
