The Centurions travelled to Allpay Park, Hereford for the Second Leg of the Wiseman Lighting (UHL) Floodlit Cup Final with ‘all-to-play-for’, following their 2-2 draw with WESTFIELDS FC at The Talent Hire Stadium in the First Leg, and produced a hard-working, professional performance to win the competition.
At the weekend, in a match slotted in between the two legs of the Wiseman Lighting (UHL) Floodlit Cup Final, Cirencester suffered a 3-1 defeat to near rivals LYDNEY TOWN in a league match that could easily be classed as a ‘6-pointer’, and as a result it could also be assumed that confidence was low before this second leg match – particularly having been hauled back from a 2-goal lead to tie the first leg.
On the other hand - would it be that the squad had something to prove to themselves and as a result they would raise their performance to the level that enabled them to defeat high-flying ROMAN GLASS St. GEORGE 4-3 in the semi-final.
We would soon find out ………… and it was the latter as with a bright start and a hard-working performance in the second half The Centurions won the Competition.
The game started at a fast pace as within the first five minutes Harrison Reeves had a shot blocked for the rebound to be fired over the target, and a few minutes later a Finley Bell corner kick was headed goalward by Ross Gabriel and eventually cleared.
Either side of the 15-minute mark ROSS GABRIEL scored a brace – the first a close-range finish as he latched onto a ball across the front edge of the home sides 6-yard box to tuck it inside the right post. 0-1.
Within minutes ROSS GABRIEL was in position again as he rose above the home defence to place his firm header inside the right post, from right of the Penalty Spot, following a corner kick. 0-2.
Shortly after Finley Bell had an effort deflected for a corner kick, the home side had the ball in the back of the Cirencester net - but ruled out for ‘offside’, and a couple of minutes later Dan Stoneman was denied by a fine save from Ronnie Newbery.
As the interval loomed Jack Horrell floated a lovely ball over the home defence towards Reeves but his effort was just wide of the target.
Half Time: 0-2
Within five minutes of the re-start Newbery was forced into another fine save to deny the ‘shoot-on-sight’ Stoneman and almost immediately Finley Bell struck the side-netting following some intricate footwork.
This was soon followed by Kyle Pitts heading a Horrell free kick back across the goal and wide of the far post.
At the mid-point Newbery produced yet another fine save to deny the hosts before FINLEY BELL latched on to a rebound near the Penalty Spot and instantly curled it with his left foot into the top left corner to give Cirencester a three-goal advantage. 0-3.
The home side responded soon after as DAN STONEMAN was finally rewarded with the goal he had been searching for with a firm strike and moments later a Mason Godsall effort was diverted for a corner kick.
Encouraged Westfields pressed and once again the ball finished in the visitor’s net - to be ruled out and a free kick awarded to Cirencester.
As the home side continued to press, they were denied by Newbery and a stubborn Cirencester defence that ‘dug-in’ to become WINNERS of the WISEMAN LIGHTING (UHL) FLOODLIT CUP.
Full Time: 1-3
A fantastic performance and result for The Centurions - who have had a difficult and unpredictable season as a new, young team in the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier Division – to end the season with some silverware.
WELL DONE TO EVERYONE INVOLVED AND CONGRATULATIONS
YOU ARE FLOODLIT CUP WINNERS
