Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Lydney Town  3 - 1  Cirencester Town

Match report produced from Social Media comments

The Centurions returned to Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division action, following their endeavours in the Wiseman Lighting (UHL) Floodlit Cup Final Challenge Cup Final (First Leg) in mid-week, as they travelled to the Forest of Dean to face an ‘in-form’ LYDNEY TOWN side that scored a quick brace in the first half to secure the points.

Prior to the match Lydney were in a fine run of form, having secured 10 points from their last five games (the defeat being to ‘Champions Elect’ Hartpury University), to sit in 17th place in the League Table with 32 points from 35 games, whilst Cirencester have obtained 35 points from the same number of games to sit one place above their hosts. Another ‘6-pointer’.

The home side, full of confidence from this recent run of results indicated their intent early in proceedings as they had the ball in the Cirencester net after only 4-minutes but it was ruled out for ‘offside’.

Cirencester responded as Finley Bell attempted to set up Jack Freeman after he intercepted a pass from ‘keeper Oliver Phillips but a heavy touch prevented the opportunity and shortly afterwards Freeman fired wide after collecting a long ball.

Shortly after the mid-point of the half Jordan Sheen nearly opened the scoring when he reached a cross, and moments later ARCHIE MYATT received the ball in the right channel, 25 yards out, took a couple of strides forward and fired the ball past an incoming defender and past an unsighted Ronnie Newbery inside the far-left post.  1-0.

Two minutes later Mikkiel Graham embarked on a long run down his right flank before sending a cross to the far-left post where an incoming team-mate headed it towards the Penalty Spot for ARCHIE MYATT to volley into the net as he darted forward.  2-0.

Once again Cirencester responded as Finley Bell delivered a through ball to Harrison Reeves but his strike was tipped onto the bar by Phillips.

As the interval approached Myatt was denied his hat-trick by Newbery who did well to get down and save.

Half Time:   2-0

Ten minutes into the second period the home side had the ball in the net again but it was ruled-out and a free kick awarded to Cirencester for a foul in the build-up play.

A few minutes later the busy Reeves had a couple of pots at the target – the first rebounding to Ethan Rose who fired over and the second was diverted for a corner kick.

At the mid-point of the half Lee Smith had the ball in the Cirencester net but this too was ruled out for ‘offside’.

As the match was drawing to a close Luke Vaughan pressed his marker and Sheen nipped in to steal the ball, dummy his way inside the box and slip it past an advancing Newbery to a supporting SEAN McKEON for a tap-in for their third goal.  3-0.

In ‘added-time’ JACK FREEMAN scored a consolation goal for Cirencester from the Penalty Spot.

Full Time:   3-1

A difficult game for Cirencester against ‘in-form’ opponents.
