The Centurions moved into the Quarter Final of the competition by overcoming The Quarrymen of CORSHAM TOWN following a highly entertaining, end-to-end, six-goal thriller of a cup-tie.
In the two previous meetings of the teams in the Uhlsport Hellenic League-Premier Division this season both teams have recorded an ‘away’ victory by a four-goal margin – Corsham 2-6 and Cirencester 0-4 – so much was anticipated of this cup-tie and it didn’t disappoint.
The match started at a frantic pace as the visitors Liban Ibrahim (recently of Swindon Supermarine) had his effort deflected over the bar for a corner kick, followed by a second which sailed out of play for a goal-kick.
Cirencester responded as Finley Bell’s effort from the left channel of the Corsham box was pushed to his left by ‘keeper Louis Smith to be collected by BONSA TESHOME who struck a firm shot inside the near right post from a narrow angle to open the scoring. 1-0.
Shortly afterwards Ross Gabriel plucked the ball out of the air but his volley was blocked, and this was soon followed by some tricky footwork from Harrison Reeves and a shot that was saved.
Leading up to the mid-point of the half Ronnie Newbery was called into action to deny Nathan Hall after Ibrahim had delivered a through-ball to him but shortly afterwards Corsham did open their account when THEO JEREMY latched onto a cross-field free kick before advancing and driving it under the home custodian.
Corsham pressed through Jeremy and Hall and once again Newbery was called into action as he dived to his left to deny the visitors.
A few minutes before the interval Cirencester regained the lead when ROSS GABRIEL headed a corner kick from the left by Reeves back across the goal and inside the far-left post.
Half Time: 2-1
Within a couple of minutes of the re-start The Quarrymen were level again when a headed clearance from a corner kick was collected by Henry Njonjo and fed to BRADEN HUMPHREYS who tucked it into the corner. 2-2.
The game continued in an ‘end-to-end’ fashion and around the mid-point of the half Kyle Pitts headed a Bell free kick against the bar and Corsham had the ball in the net but it was disallowed for ‘offside’.
With ten scheduled minutes remaining Cirencester regained the lead when a cross-field pass reached U18’s player EDWARD TAYLOR, in the left channel of the visitor’s box, and he struck a superb volley that bypassed the advancing ‘keeper. 3-2.
In ‘added-time’ BONSA TESHOME scored his second to put the tie beyond the visitors and The Centurions advanced into the next round of the competition.
Full Time: 4-2
An entertaining cup-tie with both sides going for it but Cirencester continued their recent fine form to secure the victory.
