The Centurions travelled to Mundy Playing Fields – the home of THORNBURY TOWN - for their latest Uhlsport Hellenic League – Premier Division fixture and produced another solid, professional performance against their ‘in-form’ opponents to return with the three points.
The home side are in a good run of form leading up to the game - having won four of their last five league matches – and prior to this match sat in 15th place in the league table with 33 points from 29 games played whilst Cirencester sat one place below with 32 points from 31 games played. In their last five league matches Cirencester have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 so the game was expected to be a competitive one.
The reverse fixture in September resulted in a 2-2 draw.
The visitors kicked off as the game began very slowly for both teams on a heavy pitch although Cirencester had a strong shout for a Penalty Kick rejected when Aidan Bennett appeared to be pushed in the back whilst in the box eight minutes into the match.
Cirencester began to increase the pressure as a Bonsa Teshome cross was headed out for a corner kick that the home ‘keeper Adam Clark punched over his bar for another corner kick. This time Harrison Reeves’ kick reached Kyle Pitts at the back post and his header back across goal was wide of the post.
A couple of minutes later Teshome won a free kick on the right channel front edge of the home box and HARRISON REEVES clipped it into the top right corner to open the scoring. 0-1.
Just before the half-hour mark the home side were awarded a free kick that Luke Franklin directed towards the left post but Cirencester custodian Ronnie Newbery dived across his goal to save.
Half Time: 0-1
Almost immediately from the re-start Teshome had a chance to double the visitors lead but his strike lacked the necessary power to trouble Clark.
Seven minutes into the second half a partially blocked shot looped across the home box towards the area right of the Penalty Spot and an alert and determined AIDAN BENNETT chased it down, as defenders came across, and from just outside the 6-yard box managed to poke it goalwards past the oncoming Clark and covering defenders into the net to double the visitor’s advantage. 0-2.
Shortly afterwards Bennett was involved again as he supplied U18’s player Harley Arnold on the edge of the home box but the resulting strike was just over the bar.
As the hour mark approached FINLEY BELL received the ball in the right channel of the home box, cut left and struck a firm drive inside the far-left post. 0-3.
At the mid-point of the half Arnold fired narrowly over the bar again and a little while later Ross Gabriel headed a Bennett cross past the post, and with ten minutes to go a Bennett strike flew past the top corner.
Full Time: 0-3
A solid, professional team performance from The Centurions against a side in a good run of form on a heavy pitch.
