The Centurions seventh fixture of 2025 brought ‘The Romans’ of ROMAN GLASS ST. GEORGE to The Talent Hire Stadium for this Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Divison match and following a seven-goal thriller ‘The Romans’ returned to Bristol with the 3-points.
Following Cirencester’s voluntary relegation from the Southern League their first Uhlsport Hellenic League fixture of the 2024-25 Season took them to Oldlands Park to face Roman Glass St. George, and with a new, young squad they suffered 6-1 defeat.
Since then, today’s visitors have spent the season in the top five positions and prior to this match sat in 4th place with 53 points from 27 games played, whilst their hosts are in a good run of form – unbeaten in their last six fixtures – and currently sit in 15th place with 32 points from 30 games.
The action was at both ends from the kick-off as home ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery was called into action in the first couple of minutes and this was quickly followed by a fine left footed strike from the edge of the box by HARRISON REEVES into the top right corner. 1-0.
Fifteen minutes later it was all-square as LAURENT DAVIS-WILSON equalised for the visitors but it took a further two minutes for AIDAN BENNETT to restore the lead. 2-1.
As the game entered the second quarter it became a little feisty but Cirencester still managed to create a couple of openings as Bennett headed a free kick narrowly wide before putting Finley Bell through - his effort from a tight angle was also narrowly wide.
When The Glass countered a superb sliding tackle from Lewis Thorne stopped their progress and shortly before the interval Jack Horrell fired over the target from distance.
Half Time: 2-1
It must have been an interesting dressing room discussion during the break for the visitors as within the first couple of minutes JACK SMITH had scored two goals to give his side the lead. 2-3.
It was also necessary for Newbery to pull off another save as he dived to his left to keep the ball out of his net before Cirencester responded through Reeves who fired narrowly wide of the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.
Around the hour mark Ed Scott conceded a corner kick with a committed block and Newbery made another diving save to keep the scores level after Cirencester had equalised following a neat inter-change of passes between Bell and Reeves enabled Bell to square the ball to HARRISON REEVES who buried it into the bottom right corner. 3-3.
With ten scheduled minutes remaining JOE McLENNAN scored a debut goal for the visitors and despite some neat play the home side were unable to break through and the visitors took the 3-points – ending The Centurions unbeaten start to 2025 in the process.
Full Time: 3-4
Despite the result the performance of The Centurions is a good indicator of the progress they have made since the start of the season.
