The Centurions travelled to the Sixways Stadium, former home of Rugby Union side Worcester Warriors, to face WORCESTER RAIDERS and after a competitive game, played in difficult conditions due to Storm Darragh, came away with a point.
Prior to the match ‘The Raiders’ sat in 9th place in the table with 34 points from their 22 games played whilst Cirencester had secured 18 points from the same number of games to sit in 16th place.
The Cirencester starting eleven had a couple of key players missing from their defence, Jordan Morris and Jonathan Aitkenhead due to injury, and as a result Dave Bampton and Ogaga Edward returned to fill the vacancies. Ross Gabriel returned to the forward line in place of Harrison Reeves (unavailable) and the forward positions were shuffled to accommodate this.
Both sides struggled to deal with the cold and windy conditions in the huge 12500 capacity stadium during the first quarter but with the wind behind them the home side tried an early long-range strike as Jamie Douglas used the wind to test visiting ‘keeper Ronnie Newbery who did well to save.
A few minutes later Sam Whitton tried another long-range effort and ponce again Newbery did well to push it over his bar.
Cirencester responded as Finley Bell countered quickly to break through on goal but home custodian Charlie Emery advanced to make a double save to deny both Bell and Ross Gabriel.
Shortly after the mid-point Newbery was called into action again to deny Toby Moran who controlled the ball on his chest before unleashing a low volley from close range.
Cirencester responded to this shortly afterwards when a quick counter attack put Gabriel through for a 1v1 with Emery but once again the ‘keeper came out on top.
A few minutes later Liam Banks tried another long-range effort, using the wind to his advantage, that required a sensational dive from Newbery to push it onto the bar.
Five minutes before the interval a great strike from FINLEY BELL finally evaded Emery to open the scoring.
Half Time: 0-1
In the opening minute of the second half Cirencester were awarded a free kick on the edge of the home box that Jack Freeman fired narrowly over the bar and this was soon followed by an effort from Bonsa Teshome from a similar distance that passed narrowly wide of the right post.
Shortly before the hour Cirencester doubled their lead when JACK FREEMAN stole the ball off the last defender and tucked it into the net. 0-2.
A couple of minutes after the hour the home side were awarded a Penalty Kick that JAMES DOUGLAS stepped forward to convert. 1-2.
Encouraged by their breakthrough the home side began to press forward more often and three minutes from the scheduled finish they were rewarded when JUDE HILL volleyed the ball into the net to level. 2-2.
A couple of minutes later Cirencester nearly snatched victory back but Jack Freeman’s effort flew over the bar.
Full Time: 2-2
A competitive game - played in difficult conditions due to Storm Darragh - that brought the best out of the two goalkeepers.
As in the reverse fixture The Raiders scored a late goal to level the score for a point.
