Uhlsport Hellenic League

Premier Division

Cirencester Town  2 - 6  Corsham Town

Match report by Dave Pyzer

The Centurions third successive Hellenic League – Premier Division home match brought CORSHAM TOWN to The Talent Hire Stadium and after an encouraging recovery in the first half, an early goal in the second period enabled The Quarrymen to go on and secure a resounding victory.

The Cirencester starting eleven had a couple of changes from that which narrowly lost to Malmesbury Victoria at the weekend as Lewis Thorne and Jack Horrell returned, the former following his suspension, and this enabled Ethan Rose and Aidan Bennett to take up their usual positions, in midfield and attack respectively.

The bench included new faces David Bampton and Craig Graham alongside Bonsa Teshome, Oakley James and Edward Taylor.

Corsham kicked-off playing towards The Shed end of the ground and immediately began to work their right flank before losing the ball as they cut inside enabling Cirencester to counter to the left corner for Marcel Anie to send a cross towards the near post where it was cleared and recycled back to him – some nifty footwork followed enabling him to cross again but this time it was caught by long term adversary Kent Kauppinen in goal.

The visitors responded as Dylan Lewis released Jemar South-Thomas into the left channel of the home box but his low cross was cleared by Jack Horrell and recycled to Lewis who laid the ball to Jamal Salawu but his touch enabled ‘keeper Sam Ayres to collect.

A couple of minutes later Corsham opened the scoring when the ball was fed to Salawu in the right channel of the home box and his fierce strike from 15 yards was parried by Ayres to rebound into the path of a supporting JEMAR SOUTH-THOMAS who immediately smashed it into the open net from 10 yards before Ayres could recover.  0-1.

Cirencester responded to this early setback as Finley Bell supplied Jack Freeman near the right front corner of the visitor’s box but as he cut left to line up his shot he lost the ball. This was soon followed by a strong 30-yard run down the centre by Horrell who slid the ball into the left channel of the box for Aidan Bennett to collect but he was quickly surrounded enabling Kauppinen to clear.

The home side were pressing to good effect at this stage with Bennett often the intended recipient. Finley Bell then slipped the ball towards the right corner for an overlapping Lewis Thorne to chase and collect – culminating in a throw-in to The Centurions that resulted in Bell supplying Ethan Rose as he darted across the Corsham box to cross from the by-line but too heavy for the incoming support.

Shortly after the mid-point of the half Cirencester were awarded a free kick 10-yards inside the visitor’s half, left flank, that Bell sent towards the Penalty Spot where Bennett rose to head – cleared by Andre Freckleton for a counter attack and the second goal as it reached JAVI BLASQUEZ who moved along the front edge of the home box before sending a scuffed shot past a wrong-footed Ayres and inside the right post.  0-2.

Four minutes later Corsham worked the ball across the front edge of the home box and down the left side edge before Joe Davis sent a cross towards the far-right post where JAMAL SALAWU arrived to drive it into the net via the left post.  0-3.

Despite the score-line Cirencester kept plugging away but were finding it difficult to penetrate the visitors defence until, ten minutes from the scheduled interval, JORDAN MORRIS embarked on a determined 30-yard run down the left channel that took him to the edge of the Corsham box where he fired into the bottom right corner.  1-3.

Encouraged the home side pressed and produced some neat football whilst the visitors countered as Blasquez laid the ball to Davis who struck the left post from the right channel front edge of the Cirencester box. The rebound was recycled but fired over the target from 25 yards.

Two minutes into added-time Bennett received the ball on the right flank and delivered a deep cross towards the front edge of the visitors 6-yard box where a defender intervened and his attempted clearance resulted in the ball rebounding off the right post and back into the centre of the goalmouth where JACK FREEMAN finished from close range.  2-3.

Half Time:   2-3

As a result of the late recovery home fans went to the break thinking it was ‘game-on’ and hoping for an interesting second period but it was not to be as Corsham scored within 3-minutes of the re-start as a corner kick from the left reached an incoming JAKE WILSON on the front edge of the 6-yard box and his unchallenged, powerful header flew into the net.  2-4.

A couple of minutes later another corner kick from the left also reached the head of Wilson and this time his fierce header struck Ayres and was cleared downfield.

During the next few minutes Cirencester pressed and were awarded a corner kick that reached Morris, right channel-15 yards out, who volleyed over the bar. This was soon followed by a charging run from Anie and pass to Bennett who turned and shot from the centre front edge of the Corsham box – over the bar.

Approaching the hour mark South-Thomas made a run to the home Penalty Area and shot – parried by Ayres to a supporting Blasquez but his shot was blocked on the line by a covering Horrell.

Shortly before the mid-point of the half Salawu had a shot blocked by Ayres to be quickly followed by a double-block in the 6-yard box.

Cirencester replied with a move down their left flank as Morris and Bennett combined to supply Bell who fired over and almost immediately Corsham mounted a counter that reached JAVI BLASQUEZ near the Penalty Spot who calmly tucked his shot into the net.  2-5.

A couple of substitutions were made by both sides before Freeman reached the left by-line to send a low cross through the front edge of the Corsham 6-yard box and out for a throw-in on the far-side of the pitch.

Corsham scored their final goal after a Blasquez effort rebounded off the left post for DYLAN LEWIS to finish from close range.  2-6.

Whilst the home side kept trying, they were unable to mount any serious threat on the Corsham goal and had no answer to the visitor’s fluid attack that fired a couple more efforts wide of the target in the closing minutes.

Full Time:   2-6

The suggested promise of a recovery at the end of the first period did not materialise as The Quarrymen added their fourth so soon after the break to stifle any hope and they proved too strong on the night with a clinical performance.
