CIRENCESTER TOWN made the short journey up the A419 to face Swindon Supermarine in the Third Qualifying Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy and, sadly, their ‘mini cup run’ came to an abrupt end when they were soundly beaten by the higher level side.

There were three changes made to the starting line-up that faced Biggleswade FC the
previous Tuesday; Nick Hancock, Aidan Bennett and Joe Shepherd replacing Jordan Lymn, Ross Gabriel and Nick Peare respectively.

On an afternoon where conditions were just about perfect for football, on a billiard-table
flat pitch, it was the home side that started much the brighter. There was just 10 minutes
on the clock when Marine took the lead: ex-Centurion BRAD HOOPER curling in an
exquisitely placed shot from 22 yards.

This was the perfect platform for the Webbswood outfit to take control of the game but
they failed to capitalise on their early lead and the Centurions started to get back into the game. Ciren left back Jordan Morris delivered a couple of sumptuous crosses into the Marine penalty area but sadly there was no one to apply the finishing touch.

Then, on 32 minutes, the industrious Levi Irving beat two defenders to fire off a shot that
cleared both Marine ‘keeper Conner Johns and the crossbar.

The same player outleaped everyone from a Joe Turley corner just a few moments later,
but he sent his header narrowly wide of the far post.

It was the Centurions who were on the front foot when referee Harley Hetherington blew
his half time whistle.

Sadly, the second 45 minutes went much the same way as Ciren’s recent away encounters and it was the home side that took charge of the game.

A swift counter-attack on 52 minutes saw Marine double their lead; a low cross was deftly backheeled into the net by JAMES HARDING  from six yards.

The goal gave Marine a comfortable cushion in the game, and despite lots of honest
endeavour from the away side, they couldn’t find a way back into the tie.

The game was effectively ‘done and dusted’ on 70 minutes when a long ball from Ryan
Campbell found the dangerous James Harding. He slotted the ball to Marine substitute
ZACK KOTWICA, who held his nerve, shimmied gracefully, and cleverly passed the ball into the visitor’s net.

To Ciren’s credit they battled for the full 90 minutes, always looking to reduce the arrears. A Nick Peare drive and a Joe Shepherd header failed to trouble marine ‘keeper Connor Johns, and it was Supermarine who progressed to the First Round proper:

Full Time:   3-0

GOOD LUCK to SUPERMARINE in the next round of the competition.
