Evo-Stik League Southern D1 S&W

Cirencester Town 1 - 3 Evesham United

Match Report by Andy Buchan

After a share of the spoils at Wimborne pushing Ciren back into second place, we welcomed Evesham United to the Corinium for this top of the table clash.

From the start Ciren showed their intent with Sam Collier hitting a low shot past the post after three minutes. Two minutes later Ciren had the first corner of the game which was punched clear by the Evesham goalie.

Both Wells and Taylor had shots deflected, and in the 28th minute Ciren had a free kick which was floated high into the Evesham 6 yard box. Goalkeeper Coleman caught and then dropped and managed a re-catch before the ball crossed the line.

For the first 20 minutes it was all Ciren playing good football and moving forward into dangerous positions as was the case in the 41st minute when Griffin fired a shot over the bar from the edge of the box.

In the 44th minute, on one of Evesham few attacks, Lee Osborne made his way down the left hand side and hit a low hard cross which Matt Bath was unable to get to and lurking on the goal line was ex Ciren player Marcus Palmer with the easy task of knocking it into an empty net.

Half Time Ciren 0-1 Evesham.

The second half started more even than the first with Evesham now playing with more confidence after scoring the late goal in the first half.

In the 50th minute, Evesham had three corners in succession, pinning Ciren in their own half. When Ciren cleared, a long high ball found Collier at the far post. He waited for the ball to drop and fired wide. Many in the stands were shouting "you should have headed it’’, but hind sight is a wonderful thing.

Brian Hughes made a early substitution bringing off Scott Griffin, playing his first game back after suspension, and on came Sam Packer.

Ciren continued to push forward but it just seemed to be one of those games where nothing was going Ciren’s way, and also the Evesham No 5 Henry Eze was playing a blinder. In the 67th minute Aidan Bennett replaced Chris Taylor.

In the 74th minute Evesham had a corner from the left which was hit hard and low and evaded the Ciren defence and landed at the feet of the waiting Liam Hughes who had the simple task from 4 yards of smashing the ball into the net giving Evesham a two nil lead.

In the 76th minute from a free kick Jamie Reid headed over the bar and in doing so picked up an injury and was replaced by Joe Shepherd. Four minutes later a good run from the Evesham substitute, Leigh Downing, down the left and from 20 yards he hammered a right footed shot beating Bath at the near post to make it 3-0.

With ten minutes remaining, Ciren kept pushing with the fresh legs of Bennett, who was in the thick of most things, keeping the Evesham back four busy.

In the 83rd minute Bennett put a good ball through to Collier whose shot sneaked past the post.

In the 90th minute Ciren got a consolation goal when a long ball found Sam Collier on the left side and his left footed shot beat the keeper finding the far corner of the net. A inute later the ref blew for full time.

Full Time Ciren 1-3 Evesham.

This was a night when we could have few complaints as the better team on the night won, our heads had dropped, but our spirits are high. We need to get a result against Hungerford at home this Saturday which will get us back on track.
