CIRENCESTER TOWN V SWINDON SPITFIRES LADIES
CIREN LADIES HAVE A FLYING START
With the season finally under way, the pressure was on for the Ladies to make their mark on the league.
A heavy wind behind them in the first half meant that the Ladies needed to capitalise on their advantage. And capitalise they did.
Amid some good passing play came the first score of the match with a crisp finish from Steph Lewis. She shortly followed doubling the score with a curving corner that sweetly entered the top right hand corner. With the elements playing a large part of the match the Ciren team battled hard as a unit. Their reward came through Ellie Barry just before half time where some good communication, movement and passing tore apart the Spits’ defence allowing Barry to slot home from 2 yards meaning Town went in 3-0 at half time.
After the break, Town had a tough battle with the strong wind now against them which showed with Swindon’s early score. However, Town quickly regrouped and fought solidly back leading to a quick reply through a coolly taken shot by Helen Lewis
.
With the match now opening up and becoming end-to-end the Ladies defence was caught unawares leading to a debatable penalty which Spits converted.
The defence of Brown, Wadd, Wadd, and Dowdeswell soaked up the pressures of both Swindon and the wind allowing the midfield of Messenger and Dunn to push for a fifth goal. Senior grabbed the first opportunity lobbing the keeper to great effect.
However, the Spits fought back with a well placed free kick on the edge of the area being converted effortlessly in the wind. But Town never gave up and H.Lewis again converted with a calmly placed shot.
The match ended Cirencester 6 – Swindon Spitfires 3.
This means that the Ladies are second in the league on goal difference.
Annie-five received player of the match.
A good team effort.
