Cirencester Town Football Club has introduced a Development Team for Season 2009/10.

The decision to create this team was taken as a result of an approach to the Chairman and First Team Manager from the management of last season’s U16’s who had to decide whether to:-

  •         enter a team in the Youth section of the Midland Junior Premier League

  •         enter a team into an adult league

  •         or risk losing players they had been coaching for between 1 and 11 years to other clubs who were offering the chance to play adult football.

img_0319.jpgIt was considered that this was an ideal opportunity to introduce a Development Team as it would provide a route for talented players from the Junior Section of the Club and the Academy to make the transition to adult football and hopefully, in due course, the First Team.

In addition to Junior Section and Academy players there will also be scope for First Team Squad players in need of matches to improve match sharpness, or returning from injury, to have a game.

As the emphasis of the team will primarily be young players who have been playing youth football it was decided to call the team a ‘Development Team’ rather than ‘Reserves’.

With this in mind it was thought that the Hellenic League would provide a suitable platform for developing the youngsters and an application was duly submitted to see if it would be willing to accept the team.

The Hellenic League have confirmed acceptance of the team into Reserve Division 2 West for Season 2009/10.

Background.

The U16’s team of 2008/9 had been playing football in the Midland Junior Premier League for four seasons.

This League consists of development squads representing clubs whose first team perform in the ‘Conference’ or ‘Southern League’, as one of the many strict criteria for membership of the league is that all member teams must represent clubs from ‘Level 5’ of the national league structure and above. Clubs from as far afield as Burton Albion, Histon, Grantham, Brackley, Kidderminster, Almondsbury and Newport County are represented.

The Academy was created in 1996 as a partnership between the Football Club and Cirencester College to provide an opportunity to develop the skills of young football players whilst continuing their education.
Cirencester Town established the Academy model and are one of the first club to be recognised at the FA Charter Standard. The programme at Cirencester College has been awarded National Training Award status, the highest level of recognition. Last season teams from the Academy played in the English Colleges FA League, Conference Youth League, and the SW Counties Youth League.

It is expected that playing in the Hellenic League will help our young footballers adjust to the rigours and physicality of adult football and add to their technical skills which hopefully will assist their development into First Team footballers.

The Team will be managed by Richard Pitt and Dave Pyzer, last seasons U16’s management, who will face the challenge of knitting together three elements of the Club to produce a team unit able to compete in the Hellenic League whilst at the same time getting to grips with the standard of the league. It should be an interesting season.
