On 21st June 2008, ThyssenKrupp, one of the world’s leading technology groups, held its second annual UK Inter-Company Football Tournament at The Corinium.

After the success of the 2006 ThyssenKrupp Services Word Cup held in Germany, the decision was made to hold a UK version of the event in 2007 which was held successfully at The Corinium, and the venue was booked again for this year’s tournament. The company’s stated aim of the tournaments is through the “international language of football” to bring all of their employees together on a level playing field to learn about one another whilst at the same time promoting some friendly competition.

The company not only hired out The Arena, where the football tournament was played, but also the rest of our facilities including the Sportsman’s Bar and the Barbican Suite. The day started at 9am and finished around midnight with a BBQ, Bouncy Castle, evening buffet and a disco being provided for all the participants, their families and other spectators. Cirencester Town FC also provided all the football kits in which the teams played.

Nine teams came from all over the UK to take part in the men’s competition and were divided into two groups for a mini-league stage followed by a knockout phase to determine the overall winners. Two Ladies teams competed against each other for the Ladies title. There was also a highly popular Beat the Boss penalty competition with Managing Director Terry Sargeant in goal, and a raffle where the prize was an England football shirt signed by Steven Gerrard.

As part of the company’s commitment to the community, they made a donation to their chosen charity, Scope, who do outstanding work in providing support for people with cerebral palsy.

At the end of an eventful tournament, the overall men’s winners were Net ‘Em Fast from Metalfast in Swindon. The Runners Up were Stretch Belly Meals FC (Vetchberry Team 1) and in third place were Heywood Spice Boys (Heywood).

Bob’s Babes triumphed in the Ladies competition. The top scorer was Paul Sanders of Net ‘Em Fast who also won the Beat the Boss penalty tournament. The Fair Play Award went to Vetchberry Veterans.

ThyssenKrupp have already booked The Corinium again for next June for their 2009 Inter-Company tournament. They have also booked our Main Stadium pitch and Clubhouse for Sunday 12th October 2008 for a very novel idea. As they are part of a major German Group of companies, they will be holding a "1966 England v Germany" football match complete with replica 1966 football kits that Cirencester Town FC are sourcing. This really should be another fantastic event at The Corinium!

Terry Sargeant, Managing Director of Thyssen Krupp Materials (UK) Ltd, stated: "As a world class organization, the way in which we support our employees is important. The event we hold at Cirencester allows us to bring our people together at a great venue for a really well organized fun day for our staff and their families. We are now organizing our third year at Cirencester following two great, successful tournaments. The Corinium provides first class facilities, first class service and, as always, first class communication”
