Pitching In Southern League

Division 1 South

Plymouth Parkway  1 - 0  Cirencester Town

Match report by Dave Pyzer

The Centurions made the long journey to Bolitho Park for the second time in five days, this time to face Plymouth Parkway in a league fixture, and after a competitive match suffered the same fate, a 1-0 defeat, to lose their ‘unbeaten in the league this season’ record in the process.

The visitors kicked off proceedings and immediately attacked down their left flank to reach the by-line as Levi Irving crossed to the far post for Kinsly Murray to volley towards the front edge of the 6-yard box where it was cleared and recycled back to the left flank for Irving and Josh Parsons to exchange passes to again reach the by-line – resulting in a corner kick. The kick was played short and then worked to the right corner where the threat was cleared.

Having survived the initial thrust from their visitors the hosts replied by sending the ball to the left corner before playing it inside for Michael Williams to attempt to slip it down the centre for Jack Crago to collect but the pass was too long and custodian Alex Harris was able to collect.

Cirencester then worked the ball down their right flank as Jake Lee supplied Murray and he exchanged passes with Harry Williams to cross from the right by-line but ‘keeper Kyle Moore was quick to leave his line to intercept before Parsons could reach it.

The home side responded as Rio Garside charged down the right touchline from half-way to slip the ball to Callum Hall, near the right front corner of the penalty area, who then cut right, to the side edge of the box, before sending a dangerous low cross towards the front edge of the 6-yard box. The alert Harris dived forward to cut the cross out as two opponents closed in at the back post.

As the 15-minute mark approached Irving once again crossed from the left by-line, blocked but recovered by Tom Handley who also darted to the by-line to cross – blocked, rebounding to Irving who slipped it inside to Parsons as he darted towards the near left post resulting in a corner kick that was defended.

The home side then enjoyed a period of pressure as they worked the ball down their right flank with Jamie Lowry, Garside, Hall, Michael Williams and Harrison Davis all involved until the eventual cross was sent over the bar at the far post, under pressure, although the culprit was deemed to be ‘offside’ anyway.

Shortly after the mid-point of the half both sides had shots at goal as Harry Williams and William Palfrey efforts were blocked and Davis fired wide of the left post.

With 30 minutes on the clock Parsons won a high ball down the left channel to release Harry Williams who noticing that Moore was well off his line attempted a lob from 35 yards that was just over the bar.

Almost immediately Parkway sent the ball down their right channel towards the front edge of the Cirencester box where a covering tackle resulted in a free kick. Davis ran over the ball to allow RIO GARSIDE to curl a very precise effort into the top left corner of the goal with Harris helpless to stop it.  1-0.

The reply from Cirencester was a very neat period of quick, precision passing whilst surrounded by opponents involving Parsons, Handley, Irving and Harry Williams that enabled them to cross from the left by-line to the far post where Parsons’ effort clipped the bar – but he was adjudged to be ‘offside’.

As the half was drawing to a close Parkway sent a corner kick from the left into the box for Callum Rose to head across goal resulting in another corner kick that was defended.

Josh Parsons then sent a free kick from the left front corner into the mix where after several blocks a corner kick from the right was a result. Under pressure Moore collected the kick.

Half Time:   1-0

During the interval Cirencester decided to change their formation as Michael Pook entered the contest to add strength to the midfield whilst forfeiting a wide player in the form of Kinsly Murray who had battled manfully on the right flank.

In the opening five minutes Cirencester pressed three times to the left corner but came away with nothing to show for their efforts and then they nearly paid the price when a mistake allowed Garside to rob his opponent and drive into the penalty area to be confronted by Harris. The home player cut left but fired over the bar from the right channel 15 yards out.

Following this ‘let-off’ Cirencester pressed again as Handley delivered a free kick to the far post resulting in a corner kick that was cleared for the busy Garside to charge down the left flank until his cross was blocked for a counter attack.

On the hour Dunton played the ball down the left channel to Harry Williams who slipped it left to Irving but when he reached the left by-line his cross was behind Parsons enabling Ryan Lane to collect and send down his left flank.

As the mid-point approached Parsons sent a free kick from 25 yards, left front corner of the home penalty area, to the far post where Michael Landricombe headed high into the air as he attempted to clear the danger and Harry Williams latched onto the ball to head against the right post. The rebound was cleared for a counter attack towards the left front corner of the Cirencester box where Harry Williams managed to get back to deny Hall any further progress.

When Cirencester pressed again to win a corner kick the home side defended and launched the ball to the centre circle where Hall collected and galloped forward. As he entered the visitor’s penalty area for a 1v1 with Harris he slipped the ball left to a supporting Crago who tucked it into the empty net. His joy was short-lived however as he was adjudged to be ‘offside’.

With 4 minutes of time remaining Michael Pook took a quick free kick to release Aidan Bennett who crossed from the left side edge of the home box to the far-post where it was headed against the right post and cleared.

Cirencester were making a determined effort to get on the scoreboard as another free kick resulted in a corner kick and then in ‘added-time’ another free kick was launched into the home box for a series of desperate blocks before the ball was sent wide of the left post from close range.

Parkway had survived the onslaught to take the 3 points and inflict the first league defeat on The Centurions.

Full Time:   1-0

In a competitive match, played at a furious pace, Cirencester were unable to produce their usual brand of football as their hosts were quick to close down and gave them little room to play.

The home side clearly had a game plan and stuck to it as their defence blocked, headed and cleared anything sent into their box whilst the busy Garside was a constant thorn in the side of the visitors.
