‘The Robins’ of Bideford made the long journey from Devon to face The Centurions in the latest Southern League match at The Corinium Stadium and produced a determined performance to return with a point.

The only change to the starting eleven from last week’s FA Cup success at Roman Glass St George was the inclusion of Jordan Morris at left back in place of the injured Elliott Keightley.

The visitors kicked off playing towards The Shed end of the ground and almost immediately were awarded a free kick that was cleared as Jordan Morris carried the ball out of his box and down the left flank to release Aidan Bennett to the left corner and whilst this attack was repelled Cirencester were soon back again to be awarded a couple of corner kicks.

During the first quarter the home defence comfortably dealt with anything their opponents could offer and were often involved in starting attacks as Morris made a number of runs down the left flank – one of which resulted in Josh Parsons firing past the far-right post, Ellis Dunton defended and launched several passes to the left corner, Jake Lee likewise to the right corner and Shayne Anson supported Tommy Anderson who was busy making driving runs down the right flank.

Bideford were not without their moments as Matthew Buchan cut-in from the left to work his way along the front edge of the home box with Anson in close attendance preventing him getting a clean shot at goal and on other occasions when Bideford delivered the ball into the home box it was cleared.

Just before the half hour Buchan fired a fierce low shot from the right channel across goal, forcing ‘keeper Alex Harris into action as he parried the effort and Lee cleared but three minutes later the centre back delivered a pass to the right-side edge of the Bideford box for Anderson to send a low cross towards the penalty spot as Nick Peare charged forward to collect. A defender spotted the danger and moved to block his run but somehow the ball eluded them and landed at the feet of an unmarked AIDAN BENNETT at the back post and he promptly drove it into the back of the net.  1-0.

Bideford responded to the setback but as the half entered the final ten minutes Anson, Joe Shepherd and Anderson combined for the latter to send a low cross to the penalty spot where unusually Parsons struck his shot wide of the left post.  Moments later a fierce Parson’s drive was blocked by Arthur.

Into the final five minutes and Bideford began a fine move involving Toby Down, Jack Calver, George Tucker (who was pulling the strings for the visitors all game) and Buchan that came to an end when Callum McGhee fired over the bar.

A minute later Dunton intercepted a pass inside his own half and galloped forward, exchanged passes with Bennett who in turn played a 1-2 with Parsons before shooting – blocked.

A similar fate was suffered by McGhee when, after receiving a cross-field pass from Tucker, he cut right to shoot.

In ‘added-time’ a hopeful punt downfield from Bideford wasn’t dealt with by the home back-line and as Harris collected the ball he knocked Buchan to the ground resulting in a Penalty Kick. The keeper dived to his right to save Buchan’s spot kick and Cirencester went to the interval with a slender lead.

Half Time:   1-0

Within two minutes of the re-start Peare slipped the ball to Parsons, left of the penalty spot, and he slipped it left for Bennett who was knocked over in the incoming strong challenge but nothing was awarded.

The visitors pressed for the next few minutes through George Nancekivell and McGhee who lost the ball, and then McGhee exchanged passes with Lewis Wilson before firing wide of the left post. Jack Calver then delivered a free kick to the far right post where Down headed into the grateful arms of Harris.

Bideford were certainly making a determined effort to level the score and a strong run from Javan Wright down the right flank, matched stride-for-stride by Morris, resulted in a goal kick.

As the hour mark approached Cirencester worked the ball forward – run from Morris, forward to Bennett, back to Peare who crossed – headed clear, then after Bennett and Parsons combined Peare shot - caught by Arthur. This was soon followed as Joe Turley played the ball down the centre for Parsons to turn and run at the goal – Tucker tackled to receive a Yellow Card and the resulting free kick was safely caught by Arthur.

Midway through the half Bennett played the ball left to release Levi Irving who charged to the left by-line before squaring the ball to Bennett, near the penalty spot, but his shot was blocked near the goal line by Parsons who couldn’t get out of the way.

With frustration mounting Cirencester gave away a couple of needless free kicks and when they began an attack down their left flank the pass inside was intercepted on halfway and quickly fed to Charles Hanson who was able to run down their right flank unimpeded to cross towards the near post where LEWIS WILSON darted forward to send a deft header over Harris and into the net.  1-1.

The home side pressed forward in search of a winner as Morris fired into the side-netting, Irving’s low cross from inside the visitor’s box was cut-out and another effort sent over the bar but it was not to be and Bideford returned to Devon with a point.

Full Time:   1-1

Cirencester dominated possession for periods of the game but found it difficult to penetrate a well organised Bideford defence and paid the price when tension entered their game, due to not scoring the vital second goal, to concede an equaliser.
