BetVictor Southern League 2019/20

Division 1 South

Cirencester Town  6 – 0  Willand Rovers

Match Report by Dave Pyzer

After a delayed kick-off, due to the Willand coach breaking down en-route to Cirencester, the home side added to their visitor’s woes with a solid six goal performance.

Willand Rovers are new to the Southern League this season having been promoted from the Western League as Champions at the end of last season and they are in a run of good form having accumulated 12 points from their last six games, the same as Cirencester, and as a result sat in 5th place in the ‘6-Match Form Guide’ table to Cirencester’s 3rd (due to goal difference) prior to this match.

The league positions of the two sides were Willand 12th (31 points) and Cirencester 7th (39 points) but the visitors have played 3 fewer games so another tough encounter was anticipated.

Cirencester kicked off playing towards The Shed end of the ground and immediately worked their flanks with Tommy Anderson clipping the ball to Ross Gabriel who headed on towards the front edge of the Willand penalty area as John Dennis burst forward but the ball got away from him as he accelerated into the box - goal kick. They were soon back again as Josh Nelmes played a long ball to the right corner to pin Willand back and when they attempted to counter Cirencester won it back on half-way leading to Gabriel slipping a ball towards the penalty spot but his support was unable to collect.

It had been a strong start from the home side and Jordan Morris had continued where he left off on Tuesday in the League Cup Semi-Final as he intercepted and began a 30 yard run down the left channel to be stopped inside the visitors half - but there were signs that a goal was coming.

A few minutes later a Cirencester throw-in in the right corner released Anderson to the by-line and his deep cross was met at the back post by an incoming JOHN DENNIS who headed home from four yards.  1-0

Three minutes later it was two as a well-weighted pass down the left touchline by Morris was collected by JOHN DENNIS as he cut in to carry it towards the penalty spot where he confidently slipped it inside the left post as ‘keeper Mike Searle advanced.  2-0.

Around the mid-point of the half Willand mounted a couple of attacks down their right flank and during the latter part of the half they threatened more frequently although they failed to really test the home defence until the final minutes when a moment’s hesitation enabled Dean Stamp to rob a defender and slip the ball through to Craig Veal in the right channel of the box but in his haste he poked his shot wide of the far left post.

Half Time:  2-0

After the break Cirencester once again took the game to their visitors and when a long ball was collected by Dennis near the left corner he immediately cut right into the box to be flattened by the visitors ‘keeper for a Penalty Kick to be awarded. MIKE POOK duly converted the spot kick as Searle dived to his left.  3-0.

Cirencester continued to press and ten minutes later Dennis slid the ball down the left flank to Jack Freeman as he darted to the by-line to cross towards the penalty spot where ROSS GABRIEL leapt like a salmon to power his header into the top left corner.  4-0.

Whilst the home side were dominating with play that led to shots from Dennis and Freeman there were glimpses of neat passing football from Willand that suggested they could be dangerous, given some time and space.

As the game approached the final 15 minutes Willand worked the ball into the home box as Stamp and Ben Bickle combined to release Joe Curtis into the Ciren box but he over-ran the ball for a goal kick.

A minute later Bickle moved inside from the left flank and switched play to Joe Wylie on the right flank and after some quick footwork he crossed into the box for ‘keeper Lewis Clayton to catch and throw down the left channel to Levi Irving who skilfully created room to slip the ball to his right for LEWIS THOMPSON to tuck his shot inside the left post from right of the penalty spot.  5-0.

A couple of minutes later Willand were reduced to ten men when Louis Morison was awarded a straight Red Card after a rash, high challenge on Anderson.

The Willand defender had sent his clearance kick straight to Anderson some 30 yards from goal and immediately chased after it to win it back but instead as Anderson advanced and rounded him Morison unceremoniously brought the Ciren man down with a knee high challenge. This led to a melee and two more Yellow Cards, one for each side, after the Referee consulted with his Assistant.

Shortly afterwards Freeman worked his way forward to shoot from the right channel front edge of the box and after Searle parried his effort it was recycled to Freeman who slipped it right to TOMMY ANDERSON as he entered the right channel of the box to tuck the ball inside the right post.  6-0.

As the game was drawing to a close Cirencester tested ‘keeper Searle a couple more times and a clever piece of ‘hold-up’ play by Irving released Anderson for a 1v1 with the ‘keeper who saved with his feet.

Full Time:   6-0

A solid performance from the whole team as they never let Willand get into their stride following a difficult journey to The Corinium Stadium.

TOMMY ANDERSON, who made his 100th appearance for the Club in this match, was awarded The De Vere Cotswold Water Park Hotel - Man of the Match after the game.
