Match Report by Dave Pyzer

After a gap of more than three weeks Cirencester finally returned to league action with a trip to Bath to face a team two places above them in the league table and despite an improved second half performance a deflected strike late in the game was enough for their hosts to secure victory.

Whilst Cirencester kicked off proceedings it was the home side that immediately tested their defence as Alex Lambert crossed from the left corner for Babz Jarra to head clear in his first league game of the season.

This was certainly a sign of things to come as Dale Evans launched several free kicks and corner kicks into the Cirencester penalty area during the first eight minutes.

At this point Cirencester worked the ball forward as Tommy Ouldridge, Jonny Dennis and Jay Malshanskyj combined on the left flank before switching the ball to the right where new recruit Ashley Harper sent it down the channel to Alan Griffin resulting in a free kick to the visitors in the right corner. Larkhall defended the kick and immediately countered down their left flank for Lambert to drive into the Cirencester penalty area where he was brought down resulting in a penalty kick.  LEWIS POWELL stepped up and fired the spot kick towards the right post where Lewis Clayton parried his effort but Powell was first to the rebound and managed to finish inside the left post.  1-0.

Cirencester responded to the setback as a Toumani Sidibe shot was partially blocked for Shaun Semmens to catch under his bar, soon to be followed by a 40 yard driving run from Dennis, down the left flank, and a cross-field pass to Sidibe that yielded a corner kick. Mike Pook’s kick reached Griffin through a cluster of players and he volleyed wide of the left post.

That was as good as it got from an attacking viewpoint for the visitors as Larkhall pressed and Cirencester defended for the next ten minutes with Will Wellon making a couple of important blocks.

Shortly after the mid-point of the half and having ‘weathered the storm’ Cirencester began to mount attacks of their own as Malshanskyj drove down the left channel before playing the ball back to Dennis who carried the ball forward to the by-line to cross into the goal-mouth but just too high for Griffin to make a solid contact with his head.

A few minutes from the interval Lambert made a break into the Cirencester penalty area and crossed behind his supporting team-mates but the danger was not over and a free kick soon followed. An ‘offside’ decision ended the pressure.

In ‘added-time’ Jack Freeman, who had replaced an injured Tommy Ouldridge a few minutes earlier, exchanged passes with Dennis leading to a throw-in in the left corner and this resulted in a free kick near the front corner of the home penalty area when Dennis was fouled. Mike Pook’s kick was initially blocked but rebounded to JAY MALSHANSKYJ who smashed it into the roof of the net, from left of the penalty spot, despite Shaun Semmens getting a hand to it. 1-1.

Half Time:  1-1

The visitors started the second period very positively as Sidibe and Malshanskyj combined to release Dennis on a driving run down the centre that ended with a free kick to Larkhall.

Cirencester were soon back again as they took the game to their hosts with Dennis shooting from the left front corner of the penalty area, blocked and returned to him for a dart into the box resulting in a corner kick. When the kick came in Griffin had his effort from the front edge of the 6 yard box blocked and Sidibe the follow-up cleared from the goal-line for another corner kick that Semmens caught at his left post.

Larkhall countered as Powell played the ball forward to Harry Hope in the Cirencester area where Freeman cleared for Evans to collect and deliver a cross to the far post where Harper headed out.

The game became ‘scrappy’ for a few minutes around the hour mark with Freeman and Evans firing over the bar for their respective sides.

Shortly afterwards Larkhall did manage to get the ball in the net at the second attempt but it was ruled out for ‘offside’ earlier in the build-up.

At the mid-point of the half a Sidibe shot from a narrow angle in the right channel of the home area crashed into the side netting and moments later Hope sent a low cross through the edge of the Cirencester 6 yard box.

With both sides frantically striving for a win there was penalty area action at both ends of the pitch – Levi Irving shooting narrowly wide of the far left post and Malshanskyj just failing to make contact with an attempted diving header for Cirencester.

As the game entered the final few minutes Jack Camm sent a cross-field pass, from left to right, to ALEX LAMBERT who moved forward to the right channel of the Cirencester area before shooting at the target. En-route it clipped the outstretched boot of a defender to loop up and over a stranded Clayton to clip the inside of the far left post and into the net – much to the delight of the home support.  2-1.

In ‘added-time’ a free kick reached Irving on the edge of the 6 yard box and his downward header towards the bottom left post was incredibly pushed round the post by Semmens.

In the final moments of the game Cirencester worked the ball down their left flank as Tommy Anderson slipped the ball to Freeman who moved it forward to Malshanskyj in the box resulting in a corner kick that Semmens punched clear – the last action of the game.

Full Time:   2-1

Larkhall had much possession during the first half and Cirencester had to defend with determination, especially after conceding the early goal, and after the break they displayed resilience as they took the game to their hosts.
