Pre-Season 2019-20

Friendly

Cirencester Town   0 – 4   Chippenham Town

Match Report by Dave Pyzer

Following their heavy defeat in midweek Cirencester entertained near neighbours Chippenham Town of the National League (South) in their latest Pre-Season Friendly match and produced a much improved performance despite the 4-0 score-line.

Cirencester started positively with three new faces in the back five – goalkeeper (Liam Kingston), right back (Dan Williamson) and centre back (Jack Sparkes) - and Tommy Anderson making his first appearance due to injury and it was he who made a strong early run down the right flank to the corner but unfortunately his cross was behind the supporting Jonny Dennis.

A few minutes later Cirencester nearly opened the scoring when Tommy Ouldridge fed Dennis who drove to the left side edge of the Chippenham penalty area and crossed to the front edge of the 6 yard box where Alan Griffin arrived to strike the crossbar.

The promising start continued as Dan Williamson galloped down the right flank and into the visitor’s area to cross resulting in a corner kick that Griffin volleyed over the bar from left of the penalty spot.

Chippenham began to settle on the unfamiliar 3G pitch with Yan Klukowski collecting the ball off his defence and feeding his territorially more advanced team-mates with A.J.George and Karnell Chambers particularly prominent down their left flank and from one of their forays they were were awarded a free kick that George struck against the outside of the left post.

By the mid-point of the half it was end-to-end and around the half hour mark Mike Pook delivered a superb 40 yard low pass to Anderson on the right flank and he with one touch diverted it into the path of Josh Parsons as he burst forward to the right channel of the Chippenham penalty area before laying it back to Anderson as he supported to cross – corner kick from the right that was defended.

With five minutes to the interval Cirencester pressed with several players involved in some neat play but when the ball was lost Chippenham countered with a very direct move as Dean Evans launched a 25 yard pass into the left channel of the home penalty area where ELIAS YOUSEFF collected to finish inside the right post.  0-1.

There was still time for a couple of threatening moves from Cirencester before the break but no end product.

Half Time:  0-1

During the break Chippenham made four changes to their line-up and Cirencester one as Aidan Bennett replaced Tommy Anderson but this had no effect on the tempo of the game and within 5 minutes of the re-start Parsons cut in from the left flank to the left channel of the visitor’s penalty area, dummied right, left and right again to create space for a shot towards the top right corner but it was just too high.

A few minutes later a Luke Hopper snap shot from the edge of the area was also just over the top right corner of the goal but on the hour he converted from the penalty spot after ‘keeper Liam Kingston took exception to a challenge from Nat Jarvis and as the forward turned away tripped him up leading to the penalty award.  0-2.

Back came Cirencester as Dan Williamson and Bennett combined to reach the right corner resulting in a corner kick and when they attacked again a Bennett shot was blocked leading to a counter attack and a third goal for Chippenham that was somewhat fortunate in that a fierce shot from the right channel of the home penalty area was parried by Kingston but struck an incoming LUKE HOPPER to rebound into the vacant net.  0-3.

Once again Cirencester responded positively with Williamson particularly prominent on the right flank as he first fired over the bar and then combined with Bennett before crossing for Griffin to finish – only to be adjudged to be ‘offside’.

A couple more multi-pass moves followed but Chippenham stood firm and as the game entered the final 5 minutes Kieran Parselle intercepted a pass and countered down the left flank leading to a corner kick that was re-cycled to George who sent a deep cross from the left to the far post that eluded the defenders to land at the feet of DAVID PRATT who fired home from a narrow angle.  0-4.

Full Time:   0-4

A much improved performance from the home side after their heavy defeat in mid-week with Liam Kingston communicating well with his defence and Dan Williamson and Jack Sparkes prominent as they looked settled in front of him.
