Calor League Division 1 South & West

Cirencester Town 0 - 0 Godalming Town

(Match abandoned at Half Time)

Match Report by Andy Buchan

The January gales and rain wins the game at the Corinium.

Pitch inspections at 10am and at 1pm took place at the Corinium Stadium for this Calor League Division 12 S&W game between Cirencester Town and Godalming Town. On both occasions the pitch was deemed playable.

At 3pm the heavens opened and the wind began to gust as referee Chris Wood blew the whistle for play to commence.

For the first 15 minutes both sides were content to keep the ball on the pitch as the wind swirled, making it almost impossible for either side to keep control of the ball.

The first real chance within the game came in the 16th minute after a good ball from James Mortimer-Jones out to the left for Lee Smith who latched onto it moving swiftly into the box losing his marker and unleashing a shot which was destined for the far left hand bottom corner before keeper Zaki Dualah got a hand to it pushing the ball out for a corner.

Ciren’s second opportunity came in the 21st minute after a penetrating run from Steve Davies down the right saw Gavin Miller make a tackle with the ball running out for a corner. From the corner the ball was cleared as far as Aiden Bennett whose shot from 30 yards flew high and wide helped by the gusting wind.

After 35 minutes it became Armageddon as the wind turned into a hurricane followed by hail and torrential rain to the extent that 90% of the supporters retired to the clubhouse. There was no sanctuary not even in the seated areas from the elements of the weather.

The players were finding the going tough and very difficult to stay on their feet with control of the ball almost impossible due mainly to the strong wind, and in the first 45 minutes the only real attempt on goal was from Lee Smith.

At half time, referee Wood abandoned the match due to the weather and the game will now be replayed at a later date,
