Match Report by Andy Buchan
Cirencester Town welcomed Yate Town for this Calor league game on a windy and wet afternoon at the Corinium Stadium.
Cirencester were playing towards the Arena and into the prevailing wind. Ciren were quick out of the starting blocks when in the first minute Aidan Bennett stormed through the middle beating two defenders before crossing to the back post for Steve Davies who stretched to get a foot on it, only to see the ball roll past the post. With 89 minutes remaining this was to be Ciren’s only effort on goal.
Yate scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute after the ball was cleared from a corner as far as Jake Cox 30 yards out. He unleashed a shot which went through the crowded goal area beating Glyn Garner into the bottom right corner.
The wind was that strong and gusty that Garner struggled to make the halfway line with his drop kicks. For the remainder of the first half Ciren managed to contain Yate to just the one goal and expectations were high that Ciren would make good use of the following wind in the second half.
Ciren made their 1st substitution on the 57th minute with Shayne Bumphrey replacing Sean Wood.
In the 61st min Yate went close to making it 2 after a great run into the box from Lewis Haldane who turned his marker and laid a perfect ball into Mike Bryant who shot over the bar. Minutes later after a neat pass into Ross Stanley from a free kick he fired a shot from the edge of the box which whistled past the far post.
Yate thought they had sealed the game in the 68th min after Haldane broke through the Ciren defence and in a one-on-one with Garner fired the ball at goal with Garner at full stretch and just getting a part of it. However the ball continued rolling into the empty net with Haldane already celebrating his 20th of the season, but he had not reckoned on Brad Hooper getting back and clearing off the line.
Ciren made their last substitution of the game in the 70th minute with Jody Bevan coming on for Steve Davies.
From a corner in the 73rd min Garner was called upon to make another good save. This was followed by what looked a certain goal when a great cross found James Harmel 3 yards from goal, his headed attempt cleared the bar when it looked easier to score.
Yate who were dominating the game in difficult conditions and at the same time playing good football, came close again in the 88th and 90th minutes when Garner had to make two more excellent saves to prevent the visitors from increasing their lead.
Leigh Henry put it in another good performance containing the dangerous Haldane for most of the game and of course Glyn Garner who had a busy afternoon dealing with many shots coming at him in such difficult conditions and its to his credit that Ciren only lost by the one goal. The Four Pillars Hotel Man of the Match Award was voted on by the home supporters and won by Glyn Garner.
