Match Report by Andy Bucham
Cirencester Town travelled to Bishops Cleeve on Saturday for this local league derby match.
There were two team changes from the Paulton Rovers game with the inclusion of Jamie Edge and Shane Bumphrey.
Ciren were playing towards the clubhouse in the first half, and had the first goal attempt of the game in the 11th min when Sean Wood saw that Jamie Moore the Mitres keeper was off his line and chipped the ball from 25 yards which was over the keeper and the bar.
The Mitres replied minutes later with a good run from Ben Tunnicliff who made a good run down the left firing a shot past the right hand post.
Leigh Smith nearly made the breakthrough in the 18th min after receiving the ball on the left, he then beat two defenders as he ran across the front of the box before hitting a shot that looked in all the way but for a tremendous save from Moore tipping over for a corner.
3 minutes later it was Smith again bursting into the box on one of his familiar runs, a challenge bought him down which saw K Morris (referee) blowing for a penalty, Smith placed the ball and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way giving Ciren the early lead.
Ciren extended their lead in the 26th min, a free kick from the left was hit high into the box for Ellis Dunton who rose high and thumped his header into the top left corner.
Aidan Bennett, who was causing the Mitres defence lots of problems with his pace and strength, went for a ball in the 27th min that he should never have got. He battled and stole it from the defender and seeing the keeper off his line chipped him, only for a covering defender to clear off the line. For the next minute it was mayhem in the box with Ciren firing shots at goal eventually going out for a corner. From the corner Leigh Henry saw his powerful header deflected over the bar for another corner.
Ciren were now pilling on the pressure and a 3rd goal seemed imminent. This came in the 35th min after Smith from the left hit a tantalizing ball in which the keeper could only parry away as far as the waiting Bumphrey who smashed the ball past the helpless keeper.
The Mitres had one last attempt in the 43rd min when a shot from 25 yards had Glyn Garner at full stretch, and fortunately the ball skimmed the top of the bar for a Ciren goal kick.
HT: Bishops Cleeve 0-3 Cirencester.
Cirencester have now been top of the league on their own for just over a week and had no intention of relinquishing this position. After a hard fought first half which could have seen the Centurions with a bigger lead they were now looking to consolidate in the second half.
It was the Mitres who had the first opportunity in the 49th min which saw Garner make a great save diving to the bottom left corner.
Ciren made their 1st substitution in the 67th min with Jody Bevan replacing Bumphrey. All the Ciren faithful were thinking he’s got 23 minutes to make it 250 goals in the Southern League. 3 minutes later Smith made another powerful run into the box and this time he was hit from both sides and went sprawling to the ground another penalty, was this Jody’s chance? ‘‘Not on your life’ with the goal scoring machine Smugger picking the ball up quickly, placing it on the spot, run up, and goal 4-0, it seems only right that the 250th should come in a home game!
Ciren made two further substitutions with Brad Hopper and Jacob Davidge replacing Sean Wood and Aodan Bennett.
FT: Bishops Cleeve 0-4 Cirencester.
Another good team performance from the lads, four goals and a clean sheet.
