Calor League Division 1 S&W

Guildford City 0 - 5 Cirencester Town

Match Report by Andy Buchan

Cirencester Town FC travelled to Guildford City for this Calor League Division 1 South & West game at the Spectrum Stadium.

It was wet and windy which was to prove difficult conditions for both teams. Ciren played the first half with the wind behind them and it was not long before they were to show their intent after a ball from James Mortimer-Jones found Lee Smith on the left who jinxed along the front of the box before hitting a shot which keeper Will Dukes did well to tip over for a corner. From the corner Chris Holland got a good head on it only to see it rise over the bar.

Smith was unlucky with a headed attempt at the far post which Dukes got low and saved. Then Jody Bevan got in on the act and blasted an effort over the bar from 25 yards.

Ciren had more efforts with a Smith shot deflected for a corner and from the corner Holland’s header was cleared off the line. Jamie Edge saw a rasping shot from 35 yards fizz over the bar and minutes later Sean Wood had a long attempt miss the top far corner.

Ciren took the lead in the 34th minute after a good ball from Bevan into the path of Aidan Bennett whose pace drove him into the box before being upended with the referee awarding a penalty which Lee Smith drove into left top of the net.

6 minutes later Bennett was the danger man with another penetrating run and then sending in a high ball into the danger area. This time it was Ciren favourite Jody Bevan with a diving header resulting in the ball smashing into the corner of the net putting Ciren 2 up.

Half time 0-2

Ciren were without Glyn Garner, Shayne Anson and Steve Davies but such is the strength of the squad this season Brian Hughes was able to still field a strong team.

The second half kicked off with Ciren playing into the wind. However this only seemed to spur on the Centurions and it was in the 54th minute that a ball over the top was taken on the chest by Lee Smith who controlled the ball majestically before firing into the net bringing his tally for the season to 20.

In the 58th min Shane Bumphrey replaced Jody Bevan.

Ciren increased their lead in the 67th min after Aidan Bennett twisted and turned in the box and then picked his spot, smashing the ball past the helpless Dukes bringing the score to 4-0.

Ciren made two more changes with Jon Beedon and Lee Smith being replaced by Ben Prictor and Jacob Davidge making his debut in the first team. Davidge made an instant impact with fast runs down the left getting to the by-line and sending in tantalizing crosses which just needed that final touch.

Ciren scored the 5th and final goal in the 84th minute when Shane Bumphrey split the Guildford defence with a breakthrough run and hammered the ball home securing Ciren all three points.

It was in the 90th minute that Adam Clatworthy was called upon after a sizzling shot which was destined for the top of the net was finger tipped onto the bar and over for a corner, the final whistle from the ref quickly followed giving Cirencester a well deserved win.

This was another splendid Ciren performance 5 goals and a clean sheet pushing us up into 3rd place plus we have games in hand.

We have a massive game next Saturday at home against top of the table rivals Merthyr Town who are sure to bring a big crowd so we all need to turn out and bring family and friends to match their support and cheer Ciren towards a victory and promotion.
