FA Cup 3rd Round Qualifying

Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Weymouth

Match Report by Andy Buchan

The Corinium Stadium saw a crowd of 366 attend this F.A.Cup match between Cirencester Town and Weymouth F.C.

Cirencester have been on an exceptional run lately which has been recognized within the Calor league with us being voted team of the month for September. Unfortunately this run came to an end in this exciting game which saw Ciren give their all; and if not for some quality saves from the Weymouth keeper it would certainly have been a different result.

The first ten minutes were fast and furious with all the play taking part in the Weymouth half, however the first goal opportunity fell to Weymouth when from a corner a shot was deflected wide for a 2nd corner which saw a fine headed attempt fly over the bar.

Weymouth took the lead in the 20th min, a low cross found Stewart Yetton and from 5 yards he made no mistake firing into the left corner of the net.

Ciren nearly bounced back after neat play from Steve Davies set up Shayne Anson on the right only to see his powerful shot saved by keeper Jason Matthews,

Ellis Dunton who on his return from injury was playing in a unaccustomed role in midfield, picked up a yellow card in the 34th min for a mid-air challenge. Ciren’s best chance of the half came in the 38th min from a corner which saw Chris Holland power a header which had beaten the keeper but was inches over the bar.

Although Ciren had most of the ball in the 1st half, it was Weymouth who when they had it, were better with it and it was 1 up to the visitors at halftime.

Ciren kicked off the 2nd half attacking the Shed End and what a start they made with getting a corner in the 48th min. Steve Davies took the corner and found the head of Chris Holland who rocketed it into the top left corner to even the score line at 1-1 could this be the catalyst for a Ciren march into the next round!

It was all Ciren now with a Lee Smith shot bringing out a fine save from Matthews and minutes later another good save from a Smith headed attempt, in the 55th minute Ciren should have taken the lead after a run down the right saw Davies get to the byline and send in a low cross which had the keeper stranded but no Ciren player available to tap it in.

It was totally against the run of play that Weymouth got the second and winning goal. A long ball was played down the left which found the Weymouth danger man Stewart Yetton who on the turn and from the edge of the box unleashed a shot which beat Glyn Garner into the top left corner.

In the 60th min Dunton sent in a long ball to the far post, which Smith headed inside the post and it was an acrobatic save from the keeper pushing the ball out for a corner.

Aidan Bennett and Jody Bevan replaced Sam Collier and Brad Hooper in the 69th min;

Bennett made an instant impact with a power driven run down the right and then firing in a dangerous cross which was cleared for a corner. From the corner it was the Ciren power house Holland who saw his goal bound header saved by the keeper.

The keeper was in action again as a Smith shot destined for the top right corner was tipped over for a corner. Minutes later Davies pulled out another good save from Matthews from a hard driven shot.

For the last 20 mins it was all Ciren, but unfortunately for all their pressure that equalizing goal was to elude them.

The Cirencester Town Man of the Match Award was presented to Chris Holland.
