Pre-Season Friendly

Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Cheltenham Town

Match Report by Danny Hall reproduced from the Wilts & Glos Standard newspaper's website which has regular articles on Cirencester Town FC

On a day more suited to camels and cactus, Cheltenham Town edged past Cirencester Town 2-1 at the Corinium Stadium in this early pre-season friendly.

The visitors’ goals, both in for first half, came from the lively Jamie Cureton (11 minutes) and Sam Deering (28m), but the pick was undoubtedly the reply from Joe Shepherd in the 28th minute.

Cureton scored with a deft near-post header after Sido Jombati had released Jermaine McGlashan down the right and his cross found the diminutive but unmarked striker ten yards out. Ciren should have been level on 25 minutes when Steve Davies’ direct running caused panic in the Cheltenham defence. Davies’ pull back from the byline found Lee Smith racing in at the back post but he mishit his shot with the goal gaping.

It was 1-1, however, after a fine solo goal from Shepherd two minutes later. He turned his first marker, cut inside and nutmeged a second, before curling a delightful shot around Connor Roberts.

But Ciren barely had time to congratulate themselves before some classy ping-pong, one-touch football from the Robins mesmerised the Town defence, leaving Deering with a relatively easy finish.

There were wholesale changes for Cheltenham at the break, and for Ciren around the hour mark, leading to a more disjointed second period.

McGlashan and Joe Anyinsah both had early opportunities while a great ball from Ciren’s man of the match Shepherd relased Smith in the 52nd minute, only for the striker to blast over the bar.

To their credit, Ciren still actively searched for the equaliser late on and Packer’s fine curling effort in the 82nd minute was only a foot wide of the angle of post and bar after a Jody Bevan thunderbolt had been charged down.

A minute later, Bumphrey had the ball in the net but the referee spotted the tall winger tugging back a defender in the build-up.

Cheltenham understandably had much of the possession, but Cirencester will have been pleased to restrict their lofty rivals to 2-1, especially as the visitors had thumped Ciren’s Southern League rivals Evesham 7-0 earlier in the week.
