Glos. Senior Challenge Trophy Quarter Final

Cirencester Town 1 - 1 Cheltenham Town

(Cheltenham won 4 -3 on Penalties)

Match Report by Andy Buchan

This Quarter Final County Cup match was switched from Whaddon Road to the Corinium Stadium on Tuesday 19th February kick off at 7.30 pm.
Cheltenham Town put out a side predominently comprising players from their youth team for this fixture, as did Cirencester Town with the exception of a few first teamers.
Ciren took the lead in the 8th minute after a fantastic header from Brad Hooper which smashed against the bar before rebounding out as far as Jack Smith who made no- mistake with his header, giving Ciren the lead. Smith had another opportunity minutes later when the ball came quickly through a bunch of defenders. He managed to get a side foot shot on it from 6 yards but had little power behind it which the keeper was able to comfortably collect.
Cheltenham squared the match up in the 25th minute after a throw in into Zak Kotwica whose cross found Bobbie Dale all own his own and from 6 yards he hammered the ball home. The pacey Cheltenham forwards were causing problems for the Ciren defence especially down the wings. However Ciren had one final chance in the first half when Ellis Dunton sent a low ball into the far post, Smith controlled well and from a tight angle fired off a shot which hit the side netting.

Half time 1-1.

The second half started with Brad Hooper being replaced by Tim Bond.
Most of the half saw both teams creating chances which included an explosive strike from Scott Griffin who was 30 yards out. Not only did it catch the 61 crowd out, but also Connor Roberts the keeper, who managed to one handed parry the ball away.
Dunton also had a chance from a corner which saw his flicked header fly past the post. In one last push for goal, Ciren made another substitution bringing on Kieran Jones for Griffin.
Full time bought a final score of 1-1.
This game went straight to a penalty shoot out, without the customary extra time. Cheltenham eventually took the tie, winning the shoot out scoring 4 penalties against Ciren’s 3.
Final score Cirencester 4-5 Cheltenham
