Evo-Stik League Southern D1 S&W

Cirencester Town 1 - 2 Yate Town

Match Report by Andy Buchan

It had been a ‘high and low’ week which saw the Centurions take three great points at high flying Hungerford and then in midweek lose to an extra time goal at North Leigh. In this home game, entertaining visitors Yate Town, Cirencester were again without the services of Leigh Henry and also Chris Thompson both injured, Jon Beedon and Joe Shepherd being their replacements.

For the first 15 minutes, Ciren were applying the pressure with Joe Shepherd having a goal attempt deflected for a corner in the 12th minute, and Ben Wells' corner was defended and cleared only as far as Josh Morse, who from 25 yards saw his rising shot fizz past the far post.

in the 18th minute, Yate had a free kick from 30 yards on the right which was cleared for a corner. From the corne,r and after the ball was cleared, the referee blew for a penalty indicating there had been some shirt pulling! Scott Wilson took the pen, sending Glyn Garner the wrong way, and giving Yate a 1-0 lead.

Wilson should have made it two, after a fine ball in from Mitchell Page, but with an open goal Wilson skied it over the bar.

In the 29th minute, Aiden Bennett made a tremendous run into the box and as he was about too unleash his shot, he was brought down with the ref pointing instantly to the spot, Sam Collier took the pen, hitting with great pace. However, the keeper went the right way and pulled off a good save.

Minutes later, Ciren were awarded a free kick, after Bennett was once again fouled. Sam Collier, who had only minutes earlier missed the penalty, took the kick from 25 yards. It was a thunderous shot, low and hard through the Yate wall. The keeper did well to catch the ball but could only look in shock as the ball slipped through his hands and into the net 1-1.

Aidan Bennett was causing Jake Cross lots of problems with his strength and pace. It was in the 3rought him down which looked a dead cert red card to the Ciren supporters but not the ref who gave a yellow. Wells floated the free kick into the back post which was cleared as far as Dunton whose shot whistled past the post.

Half time 1-1

The attendance for the game was 115 and there was hardly time for everyone to take their places for the second half when in the 48th minute Yate scored their second goal from a high curling shot from Mitchell Page that found the top right corner of the net.

Cirencester were playing well at the back with Jamie Reid and Jon Beedon commanding the middle, and Ellis Dunton and Shane Anson also denying the pacey Yate wingers the room for making their runs. However Yate, who are the form team of the division having won their last twelve games were in no mood to let Ciren take control of the match and were dominating the midfield.

Ciren had a good opportunity in the 50th minute in a similar occurrence to the first half penalty for Yate, when from a corner Reid was grabbed and pushed in the penalty area. However the ref didn't see that one..! From the Yate clearance, which found Morse hovering outside the box, he smashed a shot which brought out a great save from the keeper.

In the 75th minute, Ciren made two changes bringing off Shepherd and Morse, replacing them with Scott Griffin and Sam Packer,

Sam Collier nearly equalised in the 84th minute after firing a left foot shot which beat the keeper and pinged off the far post.

Ciren were now piling on the pressure and it was in the 93rd minute that James Mortimer-Jones hit a great shot from inside the box which had goal written all over it before Lucios Ancin made a fantastic save, denying Ciren the equaliser.

The game finished with Yate taking all three points in this hard fought entertaining match.
