Evo-Stik League Southern D1 S&W

Yate Town 3 - 1 Cirencester Town

Match Report by Andy Buchan

Cirencester Town travelled to Lodge Road on Tuesday evening in a rearranged fixture to take on Yate Town in this Evo-Stik S/W division One league match.

Yate Town have been on some what of a roll recently after a fine cup run and some impressive league results, however after three drawn games and a decent away record for Ciren, this was to set the tone for a competitive game!

There were two changes from the Didcot match with Sam Collier back from injury and Brad Hooper making his first full appearance. For the first 25 minutes there was little to choose between the teams with an equal amount of corners and ball possession but no real scoring opportunities.
It was in the 25th minute when Yate took the lead after a high cross from Mike Bryant. Ciren’s keeper Dave Evans went up for the ball not noticing Mitchell Page coming in on the blind side who just managed to get his head on the ball flicking it into the net.
Five minutes later Sam Packer was through with just the keeper Josh Dempsey to beat. Dempsey clattered into Packer, sending him sprawling, a ‘definite penalty’ but not according to the Referee who gave a Yate free kick.

Aidan Bennett was once again in good form working the right flank and in the 31st minute he fired a shot just over the bar from 25 yards. 3 minutes later good play from Bennett who ran at the defence before passing to Ben Wells who hit a fierce left footed shot beating the keeper and just over the bar.
It looked likely we were to go 2 down in the 41st minute when Scott Wilson was through and from 5 yards he smashed the ball at goal only to find Evans in the perfect position to make a point blank save. However 4 minutes later Wilson found himself in a similar position only on this occasion he managed to dribble around Evans and tap into the empty net giving Yate a 2 nil lead at half time.

Ciren had no time to settle in the second half as within minutes of the start Yate increased their lead after Matt Groves fired a shot through a crowded goal mouth which sneaked in at the near post 3-0.
Two minutes later Brian Hughes brought on Jon Beedon for the injured Chris Thompson. For the next 20 minutes Ciren were applying all the pressure with good attacking play with Wells battling hard in midfield supported by the back four. In the 76th minute Ciren made two more substitutions with James Mortimer-Jones and Brad  Hooper being replaced by Joe Shepherd and George Washbourne.

Ciren had a decent chance in the 77th minute after a foul on Packer. Wells low swerving free kick left the keeper motionless but unfortunately inches outside of the post. In the 85th minute a good run by Packer who then laid off the perfect ball for Sam Collier to run onto and from the corner of the box his inch perfect shot beat the diving keeper and found the corner of the net, a real sticker's goal.
Ciren were now playing the better football and minutes later could have pulled another one back when the ever battling Bennett got into a good position on the right thenbeating the defender before firing in a low penetrating cross for Shepherd who was under pressure with defenders around him. He still managed to get a shot on the goal from 5 yards but could only see his effort clear the bar. Minutes later the ref blew for full time with Yate gaining all three points with a 3-1 win.

What a difference the penalty decision would have made as this would have made the score even at one each. Even the Yate supporters at the final whistle were saying it was a definite penalty! On reflection though, Yate played the better football and deserved the win.
