Evo-Stik League Southern D1S&W

Cirencester Town 1 - 3 Paulton Rovers

After a great 3-2 win at Sholing FC, Ciren were looking to establish their position in the league with a good home win, but unfortunately Paulton had not read the script and were to leave the Corinium with all three points.

Paulton showed their intent in the 1st min with a corner which was hit to the far post finding Ben Lacey who’s header was just wide. Ciren were struggling to find the momentum and it was some 10 mins later before they made their first attack on the Paulton goal after Ben Wells fired in a good telling cross from the right which Sam Collier headed on target only to see it find the safe hands of Kyle Phillips.

In the 11th min Paulton had a free kick from 25 yards. Craig Loxton saw his shot clear the wall and was heading to the nearside of the goal but for Lee Clatworthy getting down and making a fine save.

7 mins later Dan Cleverley found himself with an open goal, but his left footed shot lacked pace and was cleared by the Ciren defence. Paulton were applying most of the pressure and it was in the 25th min that Clatworthy made a point blank save from Nick McCootie.

In the 35th minute Ciren played some quality football when Wells sent Aiden Bennett up the right. His cross was met by Collier who flicked it back to Scott Griffin and with one of his trade mark shots, he fired it from 25 yards like an exorcist missile into the roof of the net.

When the referee blew for half time Ciren were mighty relieved to go in with a one nil lead.

The second half started with Ciren looking to increase their lead, with Griffin firing in a close range shot which was parried away for a corner by the keeper. Minutes later Wells sent in a  ball which was headed in for a goal by Collier only to find the linesman flag it offside.

In the 53rd minute Lacey was booked for a late tackle on Jamie Reid and it was this challenge that saw Reid being taken off injured 10 minutes later. In the 58th minute Ciren paid the price for some slack defending when a through ball eluded the defence and the keeper only to find McCootie in front of an open goal 1-1.

Ciren were now pilling on the pressure looking to regain the lead and for the next ten minutes went close on several occasions with Bennett, Collier and Griffin having chances. It was against the run of play in the 69th minute, when a long ball up the right found Loxton whose cross was met by James Billing who was moving away from goal. He twisted and powerfully headed the ball into the net putting Paulton into a 2-1 lead.

In the 76th min Ciren made two substitutions bringing off the injured Reid and George Washbourne with Sam Packer and Joe Shepherd.

In the next ten minutes Ciren were again throwing caution to the wind with Wells bringing out a quality save from Phillips and further attempts from Collier and Griffin. It was in the 85th minute when the game ended after Paulton substitute Brandon Barnes picked up the ball after a slip up in the Ciren defence, he curled his left foot shot into the top left hand corner beating the outstretched Clatworthy.

Full Time Cirencester 1-3 Paulton.

The Four Pillars hotel Man of the Match Award was awarded to Aiden Bennett.

The Match ball sponsor Mike Mabbett. Mike was presented with the match ball after the game which had been signed by all the players. A big thanks to Mike for the sponsorship.
