Evo-Stik League Division 1 S&W

Taunton Town 0 - 0 Cirencester Town

Cirencester were away to Taunton for this Evo-Stik Southern Division 1 South West match, which came only two weeks after Ciren had beaten Taunton at the Corinium Stadium in a close fought game winning 2-1.

In the first half Ciren were playing up the slope and were without the services of three first team players, Dunton and Thompson out injured with Reid suspended.

The first 15 minutes saw both teams testing each other and giving no quarter. Pretty much all of the play was in the middle of the pitch and it was not until the 23rd minute that Ciren had their 1st corner which came to nothing as Ben Wells slipped on the wet grass when taking the kick. Three minutes later Ciren had a free kick from 35 yards which Wells took and went for goal, firing over the cross bar.

Taunton had their 1st opportunity in the 32nd minute when Craig Herrod was fouled on the edge of the box. Rodney Marsh stepped up and hit a low weak shot into the side netting, Four minutes later, it was Marsh again who found himself with the keeper to beat but misjudged the bounce of the ball and was only able to miskick the ball into the waiting hands of Lee Clatworthy.

In the 43rd minute, Marsh found himself in the clear and from 16 yards hit a thunderous shot which bought out a great one handed save from Clatworthy pushing the ball around the post for a corner.

Half Time Taunton 0-0 Ciren.

The second half started like the first, with the majority of play being in the middle of the pitch.

In the 55th minute Ciren made two substitutions bringing on Liam O'Brien and Scott Griffin for Joe Shepherd and Sam Packer.

In the 59th minute Ciren had a free kick from 35 yards, Wells took it and saw his finely taken shot well caught by Matthew Urwin. It was in the 60th minute that Ciren were to have their best chance. After great play from Shane Bumphrey, who turned the Taunton defender and laid off a good ball to O,Brien, who then passed a neat ball to Griffin who then pushed the ball through for Sam Collier and from 10 yards he saw his effort clear the bar. Within minutes an equal chance fell for Taunton’s No 11 Herrod who fired over the bar from 18 yards.

The game was now coming to light for the last 30 minutes, and it was in the 69th minute when Taunton substitute Jamie Short hit a powerful shot which caught the outside edge of the post.

For the next ten minutes Ciren were having the better of it with O’Brien controlling play in midfield and Bumphrey and Griffin going close. In the 86th minut,e after good work and skill from Collier who laid the ball into the path of Wells. As he was about to shoot, the Taunton keeper dived in and collecting the ball and in the process sending Wells to the ground. The Ciren supporters were quick to ask for a penalty, but this appeal was turned down by referee Adam Penwell.

In the dying minute of the game Lee Clatworthy was called on to make another good save punching out a snap shot from Jamie Short.

Minutes later the game finished in a goalless draw, which on reflection of play, was a fair result. This was a hard fought game by Ciren who deserved the point from this industrious performance. It was another captain's performance from Matt Sysum with good support from the team.

This was a game with no cautions which was played in good spirit. The referee had contributed a lot to this, talking to the players and keeping the game flowing. He had a superb game.
