Cirencester Town 5 – 2 Brimscombe and Thrupp

Match Report by
A Smith

Cirencester Development took on Brimscombe and Thrupp Reserves and were expecting a tough challenge, although the return of the academy players meant that they were at near full strength. The away fixture was a hard fought game and the lads did well to win, Brimscombe would obviously look to reverse that result.

The first 10 minutes was one way traffic as the development squad came out of the blocks like Usain Bolt and had Shane Bumphrey going close after 2 minutes, Brad Hooper was set up by Jack Smith after 5 minutes, only to see his shot blocked. Kyle Pitts had a header cleared off the line following a corner and Josh Morse managed to shoot wide receiving a great ball from Hooper and took it round his man.

However they fell behind in the 10th minute after a long ball from the back was raced onto by the Brimscombe forward who slotted it passed Harry Ellis in the Cirencester goal.

This only caused Ciren to push even harder and within a minute of the kick off Bumphrey again came close. Brimscombe resorted to shooting from range and almost made it 2 nil but for a great save from Ellis. Attacks from the young Ciren side were coming thick and fast and on 20 minutes Dan Hill came close after a good cross from Tom Jehu was flicked on by Jack Smith for Hill to volley the ball goal bound.

The pressure paid on in the 29th minute when Bumphrey and Jack Smith played a lovely one-two for Bumphrey to smash the ball into the back of the net.

The last action of the half almost brought Ciren’s second goal after Jack Smith lifted the ball over the keeper but also managed to lift it just over the bar.

Half Time: Cirencester 1 Brimscombe 1

The start of the second half was a game of waiting until Bumphrey was booked for a dive in the 52nd minute, with the next notable event being the substitution of Kieran Jones who was replaced by Tim Bond. The next few minutes became the Morse/Smith show with Morse running rampant down the wing and a 61st minute cross was back heeled by Jack Smith into the net. Jack almost got his second from another Morse cross but headed just wide.

Jack turn provider on 69 minutes when he set up Bumphrey to make it 3–1. Two substitutions followed with Allen replacing Hill and Roberts replacing Morse. Roberts had an almost immediate impact when he managed to get a pass to Bumphrey who pushed it through for Jack Smith to get his second.

It is to the credit of Brimscombe that they didn’t give up and they managed to get a second on 83 minutes when a cross was deflected passed Ellis. Roberts and Jack combined to set up Bond who scored the fifth goal on 89 minutes.

The last action of the match was a terrific save by Ellis after yet another long range effort from the Brimscombe attack.

The ever dependable Kyle Pitts was man of the match.
