Uhlsport Hellenic Football League Division 2 West

Cirencester Town 4 – 2 Wootton Bassett Town

Match Report by A Smith

Cirencester were at full strength for this match and looking for their sixth straight league win. The conditions were perfect at the kick off with bright sunshine and no wind.

Wootton Bassett started very strongly and caused a scare within the first minute from a long throw and then again from another long throw in the third minute. Cirencester’s first effort came from a Tim Bond corner in the ninth minute and all the early questions were being asked by Bassett.

It took until the twenty fifth minute of the game for Cirencester to get a real foothold in the game and a superb run by Josh Morse resulted in a corner that troubled the Bassett keeper. The game settled into one of patience until Jack Smith slipped the ball to Liam O’Brien who took it round the defender and hit a left foot shot from around the 25 yard mark into the net.

Cirencester now began to dominate and within a couple of minutes O’Brien was his usual tenacious self in midfield when he robbed the opposition midfielder, passed to Jack Smith who picked out Jack Ayres with his cross who headed the ball home.

Cirencester worked hard to get into the game and at the end of the half were well worth their lead. They were playing all of the football against a strong aggressive Bassett.

Half time 2 – 0

With the start of the second half Clive made two substitutions bringing on Tom Jehu and Luke Allen in place of Mikey Coram and Dan Roberts respectively. Almost immediately the score was 3 – 0 when a Morse corner was headed into the net by a Bassett defender.

Cirencester now began to dominate the match and almost made it 4 – 0 when a long throw from O’Brien was headed a fraction wide by Kyle Pitts. On the sixty fourth minute a heavy fall by Allen forced the final substitution when he was replaced by Dan Hill. This enforced change didn’t affect the ebb and flow of the match and Jack Smith was again involved when he took the ball wide and floated a superb cross for Hill to make it 4 – 0.

Cirencester seemed to relax thinking that the game was won and in the eigthy first minute paid the price when Bond was penalised for a foul on the edge of the box which Bassett converted. This led to Bassett’s second after a good run by their centre forward.

Final score 4 – 2

This was a good performance all round with the back four very solid and a captain’s performance from Liam O’Brien
